Euro 2016 betting tips – Muller can fire world champions Germany to Euro glory

Germany returned to the summit of world football when they won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and I expect them to add the European crown when all is said in done in France.

When it comes to major international tournaments, Germany have been the model of consistency over the past 20 years, reaching at least the semi-final stage in six of their last seven appearances at a World Cup or European Championship. And when it comes to the Euros, no nation has won this tournament on more occasions with Germany and Spain leading the way thanks to three successes. I believe they can go clear of the Spaniards with a record-breaking fourth tournament win this year.

Germany appeared to be suffering from a post-World Cup hangover when they began their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign in lacklustre fashion. They scraped past Scotland on opening night and then crashed to a 2-0 defeat in Poland before a last-gasp goal denied them victory against the Republic of Ireland – but once they got going there was no stopping them.

Comfortable wins over Gibraltar (twice), Georgia and Poland put them firmly on course for a place in France 2016 and that berth was secured when they beat Scotland 3-2 at Hampden Park. The plucky Scots twice came from behind on that night, but Ilkay Gundogan’s goal proved to be enough to see off Gordon Strachan’s men and it must be said that the Germans could have won by a lot bigger margin on the night. Scotland did well, but Germany never really looked uncomfortable as they cut open the home defence with relative ease.

The Germans did suffer a shock defeat to Republic of Ireland in their penultimate group game, although it must be said that was a dead rubber, and they were beaten by France and England in friendly encounters over the past several months. However, I would not read too much into those results, nor would I take March’s 4-1 rout of Italy as a sign they will leave France as European champions in early July. The simple fact is this is a talented team with plenty of experience in competing on the big stage. Germany routinely go deep in major international competitions and it is that consistency that has me believing they will win Euro 2016, with bet365 offering a very backable 7/2 about Joachim Low’s side being crowned European champions at the time of writing.

As you will know from my Golden Boot betting tips column, I also like Thomas Muller’s chances of being the tournament’s top scorer. He won the award at the 2010 World Cup and then finished second in the scoring charts at the 2014 tournament in Brazil – which the Germans won. He netted 32 goals in all competitions for Bayern Munich this past season, while scoring nine times in Germany’s qualifying campaign for the Euros, so he is more than capable of being Euro 2016’s top goalscorer at 7/1 with Ladbrokes.

And of course, if you like a Muller/Germany double you simply have to take BetVictor’s 16/1 about the Germans winning Euro 2016 and Muller being the top scorer. That, quite simply, is a massive price for something that has an incredibly realistic chance of happening!
