Euro 2016 Group E betting odds & tips – Bookies backing Belgium to top Group

Belgium are once again dark horses heading into a major international tournament and the bookmakers are backing them to march into the knockout stage by winning Group E in France.

It was just two short years ago that Belgium travelled to Brazil with many expecting big things from them at the World Cup, and although they made it to the quarter-finals they failed to make a great impression after all of the hype. They battled through the group stage and needed extra-time to see off the United States in the last-16, and their campaign was brought to an end in somewhat lacklustre fashion as they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Argentina in the last-eight.

They regrouped and successfully negotiated the Euro 2016 qualifiers, with a run of four straight victories to close out the campaign propelling the top of the table, and once again the bookmakers found themselves pricing up Marc Wilmots’ side as potential dark horses to go all the way. We have seen it happen before, with Greece coming out of nowhere to be crowned European champions a few years ago, so can the Belgians live up to the billing this time?

Before they can even think about winning this competition they need to get past the group stage and they will find themselves up against some tough competition – most notably Italy. The Italians made light work of their campaign as they went 10 games unbeaten, collecting 24 points from a possible 30, but when it comes to major tournaments they are a real Jekyll & Hyde nation.

While they did reach the finals of Euro 2012, they crashed out of the last two World Cups at the group stage and therefore it is no shock to see the bookies backing Belgium to win Group E. Wilmot’s side are 11/10 favourites to top the table with bet365, who go 13/8 about the Italians taking top spot, and I have to agree with the bookies in backing the Belgians. They have been a model of consistency in recent years while the Italians have been too unpredictable.

Of course, this group also features the Republic of Ireland and Sweden, and having seen Italy underperform at two of the past three international tournaments they will both fancy their chances of advancing from Group E. But can they?

The Swedes do boast the services of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but there is only so much one man can do as we saw in qualifying when they finished third in their group behind Austria and Russia. The Irish also scraped through via the play-offs after Scotland threw away their chance at qualifying, so it is hard to see these two making a major impression here. If anything, they will probably fight not to finish bottom and unfortunately I think we will see Ireland collecting the ‘wooden spoon’ and finishing fourth (6/5 bet365), just like they did at the 2012 European Championship.

Recommended Bets:

Back Belgium to win Group E @ 11/10 bet365
Back Republic of Ireland to finish bottom @ 6/5 bet365
