World champions Germany remain a front-runner to win Euro 2016 this summer, and the bookmakers fully expect them to finish top of Group C after the first phase of the competition.

Having beaten Argentina in the final of the 2014 World Cup, the Germans made an underwhelming start to their quest to qualify for the European Championship. They scraped past Scotland in their opening game and then lost in Poland before being held to a draw by the Republic of Ireland. However, a 4-0 win over Gibraltar kick-started their campaign and a run of five straight victories was enough for them to secure a trip to France this summer.

Joining them in Group C are Poland, who finished just one point behind the Germans in the qualifying group and lost one solitary game. The Poles failed to string together victories after starting with back-to-back wins over Gibraltar and Germany, but they are now unbeaten in their last seven outings and they have been rattling in goals too, so they will certainly fancy their chances of marching on to the knockout phase of Euro 2016.

Joining the Germans and Poles in Group C are Ukraine – who won via the play-offs – and Northern Ireland after they surprisingly finished top of their qualifying group, but can either of those sides spring an upset and upstage the group’s ‘big two’ in France? Germany are, unsurprisingly, 2/5 favourites to win the group with bet365 and I fully expect them to just that. Those odds are hardly tempting however, so that means looking at other markets when betting on Group C.

A Germany/Poland straight forecast appears to be an excellent bet at 2/1 with Ladbrokes. Ukraine and Northern Ireland will be no pushovers, but the Poles have been in good form and they have had no problems in rattling in the goals over the past 12 months. They boast some excellent players, most notably star striker Robert Lewandowski who has been in red-hot scoring form for Bayern Munich, and as long as they deliver Adam Nawaka’s men should be heading into the knockout stage alongside the Germans.

Of course that means Paddy Power’s 13/8 about Poland finishing second is also appealing, while other tempting options come via SkyBet’s special “Top/Bottom Double” market and Paddy Power’s “Tricast” market, where you can get 3/2 about Germany finishing top of Group C and Northern Ireland propping up the table, and/or 7/2 about a Germany/Poland/Ukraine.

While it would be unfair to write off Northern Ireland following an impressive qualifying campaign, the Ukrainians have lost just two of their last 16 games and both of those games were against Spain. They should get the better of Michael O’Neill’s boys in their clash and that will be the telling factor in who is sitting bottom of the four-team group when all six games have been played.

Back Germany to finish top & Northern Ireland to finish bottom @ 3/2 SkyBet
