England odds-on for Euro glory after making Germans pay for Brexit dig

English football voted no to a Champions League ‘Brexit’ in the last-16, and now the bookmakers are backing them to make the German Foreign Office REALLY regret an ill-advised tweet it sent out last month.

England and Germany’s long-running football rivalry is the stuff of legend and the Champions League last-16 draw ensured it would continue with a hat-trick of Anglo-German ties that would see Liverpool face Bayern Munich, Manchester City take on Schalke and Tottenham Hotspur battle Borussia Dortmund.

Feeling pretty good about their sides’ chances, and having a good laugh at the UK’s Brexit blundering, the German Foreign Office fired off a tweet that will now be forever filed under 'tweets that don’t age well'.

“Dear Brits, we really love you and still think it’s a pity that you want to leave the EU. But when it comes to the last 16 of the Champions League we are for a quick triple Brexit – No Deal and no backstop.”

Now all that was left was for the Bundesliga’s finest to send their English counterparts crashing out of the Champions League, and to say they failed badly would be an understatement.

Tottenham cruised to a 4-0 aggregate victory over Dortmund before Manchester City destroyed Schalke 7-0 in the second leg of their tie to complete a 10-2 aggregate win, and that meant it was down to Bayern Munich to spare Germany’s blushes.

They were in a strong position to advance after holding Liverpool to a goalless draw at Anfield in the first leg, but for one night the Allianz Arena did not turn out to be a fortress and the Reds returned home with a quarter-final spot in the bag thanks to a 3-1 victory on Germany soil.

Bayern’s exit means there are no German sides left in the competition, but England boasts a full contingent with Manchester United also through to the last eight, and bookmaker Betway is backing them to really rub the German Foreign Office’s noses in it, going 8/13 that a Premier League side is crowned European champions this season.

“There was a period a few years ago when English football was in the doldrums in Europe and there was a threat of losing a spot in the Champions League,” Betway’s Alan Alger told Bettingpro.com.

“However, this year particularly has shown how strong English clubs are and after Liverpool’s win in Munich last night, we make it just 8/13 that an English team wins the European cup this season.”
