Derby stand firm but bookies still expect Frank Lampard to return to Chelsea

Derby County are determined to hang onto manager Frank Lampard, but the bookmakers believe they are fighting a losing battle in preventing him from completing a return to Chelsea this summer.

The Blues are on the hunt for a new boss after confirming the worst kept secret in football at the weekend – announcing Maurizio Sarri’s departure to Juventus – and despite recent reports linking both Rafael Benitez and Jose Mourinho with possible returns to Stamford Bridge, the bookmakers believe it is another Chelsea ‘old boy’ heading the race to take the reins.

Lampard has earned plenty of plaudits during his rookie season as manager of Derby County, and as far as the bookmakers are concerned the Ram’s Championship Play-off Final defeat to Aston Villa has only sped up the possibility of the former midfielder replacing Sarri this summer.

The Rams are defiant though, insisting they expect to have the ex-England ace still holding the reins when the 2019/20 campaign gets underway.

“There's no change in the situation at present, except for the fact that Chelsea no longer have a manager,” Derby owner Mel Morris told Sky Sports.

“We have made it clear to everyone, but most importantly to Frank, that we want him and to retain his services for the long term. If Chelsea want to hire Frank, then it is in their gift to make an offer in pursuit of that.

“In the meantime, we will continue to put our best foot forward to continue with our plans for the coming season, to work with Frank for him to know how much he is wanted by everyone associated with the club.”

Morris may be determined to keep hold of his manager this summer, but bookmaker Paddy Power believes he will be unable to prevent Lampard from returning to the Bridge, having made the current Derby boss the clear 1/25 favourite to be Chelsea’s next permanent manager.

Former Arsenal boss Patrick Vieira, currently in charge of French club Nice, is a surprise 5/1 contender for the role, while it is 7/1 that former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri trades places with Sarri and agrees to become the Blues’ next permanent chief.

Rafael Benitez is out at 9/1 after reports linking him with the post received a hostile reaction from the club’s supporters, while it is now 16/1 that Jose Mourinho sensationally buries the hatchet with Roman Abramovich once again and agrees to a third stint in charge of the club.
