The draw for the FA Cup final was one that saw three of England’s heavyweights make up the final four, with Southampton the other side in the draw. While the Saints are no pushovers, they were the side that Tottenham, Manchester United and Chelsea all wanted to be drawn against, and it was the Blues that got their wish.

Antonio Conte’s side were able to make it to the semi-finals of the FA Cup as they battled to a 2-1 win over Leicester after extra time. The Blues went ahead through Alvaro Morata, before Jamie Vardy struck to make it 1-1. The game went into extra-time and former-Barcelona man Pedro was the hero as he capitalised on a poor decision from Kasper Schmeichel to head home the winner. It was a much-needed win for the Blues following a tough week, and the FA Cup now constitutes a real chance at silverware, and it is their only shot at winning something this season, making winning it vital.

This season, the Blues have been incredibly inconsistent. In their last 12 games in all competitions Chelsea have won five, drawn once and lost six, with their poor run seeing them knocked-out of the EFL Cup and the Champions League, all the while they were losing even more ground on leaders Manchester City at the top of the Premier League. With the defence of their Premier League crown over long ago, it is crucial that the Blues end this season with some form of trophy, or their campaign will surely go down as a monumental failure.

For Southampton, this is a welcomed if untimely distraction from their struggles in the league. The Saints currently sit in 18th in the league with 28 points, two short of safety. While they do have a game in hand, points are becoming increasingly difficult to come by as teams look to grind their way to survival, while those at the top have started to open up scoring wise, with goal difference potentially playing a major role in their own objectives. Their FA Cup run is of course one that will be welcomed as it is giving them some much needed confidence, however, they cannot afford to solely focus on winning the competition, as lifting the trophy does not secure survival, with Wigan finding that out the hard way back in 2013.

This season, the Saints have only won nine games in all competitions, with four of these victories coming in the FA Cup. Their situation in the league has been so dire that they were forced to part company with manager Mauricio Pellegrino before replacing him with former-Stoke manager Mark Hughes. Hughes was able to oversee a victory with his side in his first game, but he will know that there are far more important games to come, with Premier League survival more precious than an FA Cup win.

The contrasting fortunes of the two teams means that Chelsea are the favourites to make it through to the final, and rightly so. The Blues will feel they have been given a very kind draw, but the Saints may feel that misfiring Chelsea were the kindest draw they could have been given. However, Southampton will likely have to focus almost entirely on survival, with this game potentially a major distraction from their fight.
