Chelsea v Atletico Madrid Betting Tips Explained

Chelsea go into their final group game having already clinched a place in the last-16 of the Champions League. The Blues bounced back from the October defeat to Roma by thrashing Qarabag 4-0 on Matchday Five, and that means they have opened up an unassailable four-point lead over the third-place Atletico Madrid – but that does not mean this is a dead rubber for Atletico.

Madrid’s group campaign has been hugely disappointing. They have only lost one match so far – conceding a last-gasp goal in a 2-1 home defeat to Chelsea in September – but they have also managed just one victory, with a string of draws being the big reason they are on the brink of making a swift exit from the competition. Last month’s massive 2-0 win over Roma means they are two points behind the Italian club going into this week’s games, so they simply have to win this match and hope that they get a massive favour from a Qarabag side that held them to a draw twice.

So can Atletico scrape through? I do not fancy their chances – Roma should get the better of the Azerbaijani champions – but I do believe Diego Simeone’s men will take something from this trip to Stamford Bridge.

The Spanish side have not lost a competitive fixture since that 2-1 loss to Chelsea in late September, meaning they have now gone 13 games without a defeat in all competitions, and during this good run that have racked up a handful of away wins as well as draws against Barcelona and Real Madrid. They can also take heart from the fact Chelsea have not been flawless at the Bridge this season – they have dropped points in three home outings in the Premier League and Roma did hold Antonio Conte’s men to a draw in mid-October. And of course, this is merely a dead rubber for Chelsea while Atletico are fighting for their lives, so the visitors will have an edge that the home side may not have.

Therefore I would not be surprised to see Atletico win at the Bridge on Tuesday night. However, for the purposes of betting on the outcome of this match, the better option comes from the Double Chance market. The fact is Atletico draw far too many games – they have drawn seven times during their 13-game unbeaten run and they have been involved in no less than three stalemates in the group stage of the Champions League. Backing them to win feels very risky – especially against a team that has beaten them once and are unbeaten in six – so backing Atletico to avoid defeat feels like the better option for this clash.

And for my second recommendation I suggest going with Atletico Madrid forward Kevin Gameiro in the Anytime Goalscorer market. The Frenchman has forced his way back into Simeone’s starting XI in recent weeks and has repaid his manager by scoring three goals in his last three appearances, including a strike in that massive 2-0 win over Roma a fortnight ago. In this sort of form, Gameiro is a tempting bet to get on the scoresheet at Stamford Bridge.
