Chelsea v Arsenal Predictions

A week after their pulsating 2-2 Premier League draw, these familiar London rivals lock horns in the first of two more matches with a place in the Carabao Cup final at stake this time.

In complete contrast to the 0-0 stalemate at Stamford Bridge in September, Chelsea and Arsenal kicked off 2018 with a thriller in which all the goals were scored from the 63rd minute onwards.

But it was anything but a dull spectacle up to then as goalkeepers Thibaut Courtois and Petr Cech had been the stars of the show, making a string of fine saves.

Ultimately, Jack Wilshere put Arsenal ahead before Eden Hazard equalised from the penalty spot and Marcos Alonso looked to have won it for Chelsea until Hector Bellerin lashed home a late leveller.

Since then, the respective managers have taken it in turns to have a bit of a ‘pop’, Antonio Conte aiming his criticism at Arsene Wenger because the Frenchman had accused Hazard of diving for the penalty, so this match and next week’s could be quite tetchy encounters.

However, at least Wenger, who is serving a touchline ban for his comments about referees, should be spared any more perceived injustice because the Video Assistant Referee system, which was first trialled in a competitive English match in Monday’s FA Cup tie between Brighton and Crystal Palace, will be in use for both legs of this semi-final.

These clubs were each away to a mid-table Championship club in the FA Cup third round, the results not known at the time of writing, and if either were to suffer an upset there it would surely sharpen their resolve to get through this tie and boost their hopes of silverware this season.

Keeping things tight worked well for the Gunners on their last visit to this ground in the early autumn and if they stick to that strategy, they could find themselves in pole position going into the return match.
