Is 6-0 spanking final straw? Chelsea boss Sarri ODDS-ON to be sacked next

Chelsea notoriously lack patience when it comes to the managerial position, so could Sunday’s humiliating 6-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City be the beginning of the end for under-fire boss Maurizio Sarri?

Sarri’s reign could not have got off to better start as the Blues raced out of the blocks and earned the tag of potential dark horses in the Premier League title race, but to say things have gone dramatically wrong in the past few weeks would be an understatement.

Chelsea were embarrassed in a 4-0 defeat to Bournemouth and Sarri responded to the defeat by publicly admitting that he may be struggling to motivate his players – something that is never a good idea when you have a chairman who does not need an excuse to ditch a manager.

His team responded with an emphatic 5-0 victory over rock-bottom Huddersfield Town, but that result would not have tempted even the most ardent of Chelsea supporters to believe their side could take something from Sunday’s trip to the Etihad Stadium.

However, they also would not have believed their side would get well and truly hammered.

City raced out of the blocks with four goals in the opening 25 minutes before adding two more after the break, and it could have been much more as the shell-shocked Blues offered little in response.

Bookmakers quickly reacted to the 6-0 battering by slashing the odds on Sarri being the next Premier League manager to leave his post, and those odds have shortened again over the past few hours with the Chelsea boss now into 4/5 in the ‘Sack Race’ at 888Sport.

“Roman Abramovich is hardly known for showing patience with his managers,” an 888sport spokesman told Bettingpro.com.

“Sunday’s humiliation at Manchester City could be the final straw for Maurizio Sarri and we now make him the odds-on favourite to be the next Premier League boss sacked.

“Sarri’s Blues started the season on fire, but the Italian looks like he’s completely lost the Chelsea dressing room, and the fans.

We could be in for another manager going through the Stamford Bridge revolving door very soon.”

While Sarri is now the odds-on favourite, Everton boss Marco Silva is considered his main rival in the ‘Sack Race’ at 3/1, while Leicester City chief Claude Puel can seemingly breathe a sigh of relief after his odds drifted to 5/1 despite the weekend defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.
