Champions League Final: Juventus v Real Madrid Betting Tips Explained

The 2016/17 Champions League Final will be contested by Juventus and Real Madrid on Saturday, June 3 and it is rather fitting that the best defence in this season’s competition will pit its wits against the best attack – but who will come out on top at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff?

Real Madrid are bidding to make history as the first team to win back-to-back European titles since the Champions League format was introduced back in 1992/93. Los Blancos have lifted this trophy in two of the past three seasons, beating Atletico Madrid on both occasions, and their run to the final has been an impressive one. They dispatched joint favourites Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals before getting the better of Atletico, again, in the semi-finals.

They have scored more goals than any other club in the competition this season, rattling in 32, and they not only have the competition’s top goalscorer in Cristiano Ronaldo, they also have the European Cup/Champions League’s all-time leading goalscorer in the Portuguese star. But if anyone can stop Ronaldo adding to his record and helping Real Madrid make history it is this Juventus side.

Juventus have dominated the Italian scene for several years now, winning the scudetto in each of the past six seasons, but the European crown has eluded them for over 20 years and they will be desperate to end their Champions League drought here. I like their chances. They impressively dumped out Barcelona in the quarter-finals before overcoming a talented Monaco side in the semi-finals, and a big reason they have got this far – and the big reason for my confidence – is the defence.

That Juventus rear-guard is easily the best in Europe at this time. They have conceded very few goals on the domestic scene this season and when it comes to European competition they have been exceptional. Leonardo Bonucci & Co. have kept clean sheets in nine of their 12 ties – shutting out Barcelona stars Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar twice – and have conceded only three goals in total. Organised, rock-solid and with evergreen goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon in fantastic form behind them, I am backing the Italian champions to become Kings Of Europe in Cardiff.

However, it may take a marathon effort for them to beat a Real Madrid side that took the 2014 final to extra-time and last season’s final to penalties. Therefore I suggest ignoring the match betting market and backing Juventus to lift the trophy instead – this bet offers more options because it includes the Italian giants winning in extra-time and on penalties.

I also suggest backing Gonzalo Higuain to find the back of the net and cap off a fine first season in Juventus colours. The Argentinian striker swapped Naples for Turin last summer and although he has failed to reach the same goal-scoring heights as last season, when he netted 36 league goals for Napoli, he has rattled in 32 goals in all competitions to help Juventus to a domestic double and the final of the Champions League. It would be no surprise to see goal number 33 come against Real Madrid.

My final recommendation is backing Both Teams To Score. While it is clear for all to see just how good this Juventus defence is, Real Madrid did blast in 106 goals in La Liga this season and they are the top-scoring side in this competition. They can find the back of the net in the Champions League Final, but that talented Juventus rear-guard is good enough to limit their chances and ensure Real do not score many. And of course, if I am backing Juve to win that means I expect both teams to score.
