Celtic v Sarajevo

Celtic put one foot in the next round of Champions League qualifying with an impressive 3-1 away win against Sarajevo a week ago. The Hoops have found themselves on the receiving end of some really disappointing European results over the years, and Sarajevo suggested another one could be on the cards when they took just before the half-an-hour mark in the first leg. Celtic responded in fabulous fashion though, levelling it up six minutes later before completing the comeback with a couple more goals following the interval, and that means they are in a commanding position as they prepare to welcome the Bosnian champions to Celtic Park on Wednesday night.

“We could have won by more,” manager Neil Lennon told BBC Scotland afterwards. “However, it’s a brilliant performance away from home. Considering where we are, so early and against really decent opposition who are tactically smart and a big threat at set plays, it’s a great performance. It’s not easy. It was a really heavy pitch and difficult conditions. So, yeah, it was a really good start.”

Lennon will be calling on his side to complete the mission on Wednesday night and given how Celtic dominated much of that contest despite falling behind, you have to believe they will. One man who will be looking to shine again is rising star Mikey Johnston. While much attention is focused on possible new signings during the transfer window, the 20-year-old winger is staking his claim to be a regular starter throughout the 2019/20 campaign and Sarajevo struggled to contain him as he scored once and helped create another during another impressive outing. I would not be surprised to see him play a goal-scoring role again on Wednesday night, but I believe there is a better betting option.

For me the best bet to place on Wednesday night’s Champions League qualifier is to back Celtic to win 1-0, 2-0 or 3-0. A ridiculous mistake from Jozo Simunovic gifted Sarajevo their goal in the first leg, and they offered little as an attacking threat as they fell to defeat. In Glasgow I do not see them causing too many problems for Celtic either. Lennon’s men have three away goals in the bag and do not need to do anything reckless here, so I expect them to do a professional number on the Bosnians in order to move one step closer to a spot in the money-spinning group stage of the Champions League.
