Celtic v Anderlecht Betting Tips

When Celtic were drawn in a Champions League group with Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Anderlecht the aim was always going to be to qualify for the Europa League, rather than make it to the knock-out stages ahead of one of the two European heavyweights. In that regard, Brendan Rodgers has almost achieved his goal, with a 3-0 win over Anderlecht in Belgium meaning that Celtic, despite losing home and away to both Bayern and PSG, need only avoid a heavy defeat against the Belgians at home on Tuesday in order to finish third in the group and make it into the Europa League.

Those who watched Celtic lose 7-1 to PSG a fortnight ago may claim that a heavy defeat is not out of the question at Parkhead, where the Hoops were also beaten 5-0 by the French side. That is, however, to ignore the massive gulf in class between PSG and Anderlecht. The Belgians were also thumped by Unai Emery's men, losing 4-0 in Brussels and 5-0 in Paris. It's maybe not quite as bad as Celtic but Rodgers attempts to play PSG at their own game was perhaps the reason why Celtic's losses were more severe.

The Northern Irishman refused to apologise for attempting to attack in Paris and many have criticised his approach, claiming that he is not learning lessons from similar losses, particularly last season's 7-0 defeat in Barcelona, but it is perhaps admirable. Celtic spend much of their season beating weak teams in the Scottish Premiership and there's a danger that arrogance could creep in to a squad that are so used to winning comfortably. These big losses will teach the players that they are far from at the level which the manager desires and should act as an inspiration to force them to continue to work hard to improve.

It was immediately after Celtic's 5-0 home loss to PSG that they went to Brussels and beat Anderlecht 3-0 and the hope for the Scottish side is that they show a similar reaction on Tuesday night. If they do then they should beat Anderlecht, who are a poor side, and odds of almost even money seem more than fair on the hosts. Celtic have a strong record at home in Europe and the passionate 60,000 crowd will spur the side on in a match which they will feel that they should win.

Patrick Roberts's absence is a blow for Celtic but Moussa Dembele's return should give the Hoops added firepower and the French striker will once again be keen to impress on the big stage. Dembele has scored four Champions League in just eight starts in the competition and that is a phenomenal return, especially considering that he is always playing for a weaker side against stronger opponents (Dembele missed the win over Anderlecht through injury). He can add to his collection on Tuesday and perhaps add a few million pounds onto his growing price tag in the process.
