Joy of six: Can Liverpool make another blistering start to season?

Liverpool made a blistering start to the 2018/20 campaign as they won their first six Premier League fixtures – but can they repeat that this time around to put some early pressure on title rivals Manchester City?

The 2019/20 fixture list is out and teams, pundits, tipsters and fans are all analysing the schedule in an attempt to determine how the Premier League campaign will unfold.

As you will know from release day, we believe Manchester City may have been handed a massive edge in the title race thanks to a favourable run-in, but what about the start of the season?

Could Liverpool put some early pressure on the back-to-back champions by either matching or bettering their opening to the 2018/19 season when they won six straight games as part of a 20-match unbeaten sequence in the top flight?

The Reds raced out of the blocks last August as they beat West Ham United, Crystal Palace, Brighton & Hove Albion, Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton to take maximum points from their first six games, and one look at their early-season fixtures for 2019/20 suggests they could repeat those efforts here.

A home clash with newly-promoted Norwich City gets things underway before trips to Southampton and Burnley as well as a meeting with Newcastle United Anfield quickly follow, and all four of those fixtures have to be considered more than winnable for a side who is looking to finally be crowned champions for the first time in the Premier League era.

There are a couple of potential top-six clashes in the early stages though, but Liverpool have not lost at home to Arsenal since September 2012 and their last two encounters with the Gunners at Anfield have ended in embarrassment for the visitors. Liverpool walloped them 4-0 in August 2017 and 5-1 last December, so you would fancy their chances of getting the better of Arsenal once again on August 24.

The trickiest of their first six fixtures, which happens to be the last of them, is that trip to face Chelsea on September 21. Liverpool do not have the best of recent records against the Blues, having won only one of their last six meetings in all competitions, but the London club will have a new manager in place by then and have suffered a major setback with the departure of Eden Hazard this summer, so catching them early on could be great timing for Klopp’s men.

So as you can see, Liverpool winning their first six games is not out of the realms of reality and bookmaker Coral is therefore taking something of a risk by offering all customers the chance to claim 6/1 on the Reds making a perfect start – with all winnings to be paid in cash!
