Can Jurgen Klopp avoid another cup final flop in Champions League Final?

If there has been one major piece of criticism levelled at Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in recent years it has been his inability to bring home the silverware in major cup finals – but could that chatter finally be silenced when the Reds face Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League Final on June 1?

There is no doubting that Klopp has taken Liverpool to another level since taking over from Brendan Rodgers, and in that time he has led the team to one domestic cup final appearance and, including this clash with Spurs, three appearances in major European finals.

That has to be considered an impressive achievement, but the problem is he continues to suffer the same problem that dogged him during his time with Borussia Dortmund – he and his team fall at the final hurdle.

Klopp won his first major cup final as a manager when he led Borussia Dortmund to a 5-2 victory over Bayern Munich in the German Cup Final, but he has not been able to follow up that cup success with either his former employers or his current employers, and that means he will go into the June 1 showdown with Tottenham having lost six straight cup final appearances.

2013Champions LeagueBorussia Dortmund 1 Bayern Munich 2Lost

And of course, he is well aware that that statistic will rear its ugly head between now and kick-off?

“I know what everybody says about me and losing finals and that’s okay and everything, that’s alright,” he told reporters. “But it’s the fourth final that we are in and that’s pretty special already. Last year we really felt we have to go back, we have to go back because we can’t let it stand like this – that’s not possible. Now we get another chance and we will go for that.”

So will Klopp be able to silence his critics by finally winning a major cup final – and the biggest one at that?

The bookmakers believe he can, with bet365 making Liverpool the 1/2 favourites in its ‘To Lift The Trophy’ market, meaning the firm will pay out if the Reds win in 90 minutes, in extra-time or on penalties.

The bookies is Even money that the Reds get the job done in regulation time, while it is 6/4 that Tottenham inflict another cup final defeat on the German and 13/5 that they do it in 90 minutes.
