Burnley v Manchester United Betting Tips Explained

Manchester United booked their place in the Europa League semi-finals in midweek, but it was hardly a smooth ride and there will almost certainly be a hangover from that marathon clash with Anderlecht. Not only did the Red Devils need 120 minutes to finally see off the Belgian, with Marcus Rashford scoring an extra-time winner, they also lost Marcus Rojo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to knee injuries that manager Jose Mourinho has described as “fairly negative”.

“I want to wait but my feeling is not good, for both,” Mourinho admitted to reporters. “I want to try to be optimistic but I’m not. I don’t think they are easy injuries but I prefer to wait until all the tests are done [on Friday]… then I can speak what I feel because I am a manager, not a doctor.”

The loss of Ibrahimovic would be a major blow to United, but the absence of Rojo could be the most damaging because the Red Devils are already without the services of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling. Weakened at the back and worn out from that Thursday night clash with Anderlecht, the last thing United need is as trip to face Burnley but that is what they face here.

That probably sounds a bit sill when you simply compare the stature of the two clubs, but one look at Burnley’s home form this season suggests they are more than capable of picking up a result here. The Clarets have turned Turf Moor into something of a fortress, winning 10 of their 16 home games while drawing two, and there are some sizeable scalps on their CV. Not only have they held league leaders Chelsea to a draw, they have also beaten the likes of Liverpool and Everton in front of the home supporters. Throw in a goalless draw at Old Trafford when they visited Manchester United this season and there really is a very good chance they will take something here. I certainly like their chances.

I also expect this match to produce very few goals. Manchester United are the lowest scoring side in the top seven, scoring only 48 goals in 31 games in the Premier League, while only two clubs – the bottom two of Middlesbrough and Sunderland – have scored less goals than Burnley this season. When the Clarets pick up points it tends to be in low-scoring affairs because 12 of their 16 positive results have come from games featuring two goals or less, while 14 of Manchester United’s last 20 Premier League outings have produced two or less. In summary, do not expect goals here.

  • There have been two or less goals in 12 of the 16 Premier League games where Burnley have picked up points
  • 14 of Manchester United’s last 20 games have produced two goals or less

  • Burnley have scored 33 goals in the Premier League – only rock-bottom Sunderland and second-from-bottom Middlesbrough have scored less
