Can Dortmund fend off Bayern Munich? Bookies weigh in as Bundesliga gets set to return

Borussia Dortmund boast a six-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga as they get set to resume their quest to become champions on January 19, but can they fend off Bayern Munich to finally end their rivals’ recent dominance of German football?

Bayern Munich came into the 2018/19 campaign as they overwhelming favourite to win the Bundesliga title for the seventh season running, but they endured a miserable first few months of the season – by their high standards – and dropped points in six of their first 11 games.

Their usually dominant home form deserted them as they won just four of their first eight league matches at the Allianz Arena, and Borussia Dortmund took full advantage to storm to the summit and put themselves at the summit.

Dortmund came into the campaign as something of an unknown quantity after a summer of change that saw them appoint Lucien Favre as manager and make a host of changes to the playing squad, but any question marks that were hanging over the new-look club were quickly erased as they won 13 of their first 17 games in the Bundesliga, while losing only once, to storm clear at the summit.

A shock 2-1 defeat at struggling Fortuna Dusseldorf prior to the mid-season break slowed their momentum though, allowing Munich the opportunity to close the gap, and now all eyes will be on Favre’s men as they look to bounce back and hold off their long-time rivals in the title race.

But can they?

Bookmaker bet365 believes Dortmund will still be sitting pretty at the summit at the end of the season, making them 8/11 favourites in the outright betting for the Bundesliga, but the firm is certainly not ruling out another title for Bayern Munich because the defending champions are now just 11/10 to make it seven-in-a-row this season.

Third-placed Borussia Monchengladbach – nine points behind Dortmund – are now the only other club shorter than 100/1 for the title, with bet365 going 50/1 that they manage to overhaul the league leaders and Bayern Munich in the next few months and complete a shock title success.

Dortmund return to action on Saturday, January 19 and they face a tricky test because their first match back after the winter shutdown sees them pay a visit to fourth-place RB Leipzig.

The visitors are 13/8 to leave with all three points, with a Leipzig win 31/20 and the draw 12/5, and by the time they do step out onto the pitch Dortmund’s lead at the top could be as short as three points because Bayern Munich are in action the night before.

Bayern are also heading out onto the road, but the bookmakers are confident that they will head home with all three points in the bag. Munich are 8/15 favourites in the match betting, with a Hoffenheim victory 19/4 and the draw 16/5.
