Brighton & Hove Albion v Manchester City Betting Tips Explained

Brighton & Hove Albion are back in the top flight of English football for the first time in 34 years and they could not have asked for a much tougher opening game – a meeting with a Manchester City side that have been splashing the cash this summer and are the bookmakers’ favourites to win the Premier League title this season.

“Taking on City will be a challenge, they’ve spent more on full-backs than we’ve ever spent on every player we’ve ever had here,” said Seagulls boss Chris Hughton. “All my players have a battle on their hands from day one but once we get out on the pitch it is 11 versus 11. It’s about players and this is a brilliant challenge for them. That’s why the more City spend the bigger this game becomes and bigger the story – but it is wonderful for the players.”

And why wouldn’t Brighton welcome this fixture. After all this is a club that has endured some tough times during their exile from the top flight. They spent years in the lower leagues without a home, sharing Gillingham’s Priestfield Stadium before switching to an athletics stadium in Brighton, and they almost went out of business before Dick Knight took over the club in 1997. But all of that is in the past and they are now in the top flight once again and their first assignment is a tough one.

Title favourites Manchester City are the visitors to The Amex Stadium and they will arrive with some expensive new talent having spent round £200million to lure Ederson, Benjamin Mendy, Kyle Walker, Danilo, Douglas Luiz and Bernardo Silva to the Etihad Stadium for this title challenge. The bookies are backing them to lift the Premier League trophy in Pep Guardiola’s second season in charge and they are also backing City to be celebrating when the full-time whistle blows in this match.

The odds on Manchester City winning the match are particularly appealing though, but that does not mean there are not some tempting options when it comes to backing Guardiola’s team to collect all three points from this season-opening trip to Brighton.

For me the most appealing option is backing Manchester City to win & both teams to score. Guardiola has been splashing the cash to bring in a new goalkeeper and some new defenders in an attempt to strengthen a rear-guard that conceded an average of one goal per game last season, but this unit is going to need some time to settle down and that means Brighton could take advantage to give their supporters something to cheer in a losing effort.

And of course, if I am backing Manchester City to win a match in which both teams find the back of the net, I am also expecting we will see at least three goals at The Amex Stadium on opening day.
