Brazil are just one win away from winning the 2019 Copa America on their home soil, and they are coming up against a team they have already hammered once in this competition – Peru. So will it be ‘mission accomplished’ for the Brazilians or will the Peruvians spring an upset and avenge their humiliating group stage defeat?

Let’s make no bones about it, Brazil have made it all the way to the final but has been a far from impressive run from Tite’s team. They heard boos from the supporters during their first two outings and they scraped past Paraguay on penalties in the quarter-finals to set up a semi-final tie with Argentina. They came out on top in that one, but there was plenty of controversy surrounding that fixture and it means they go into Sunday’s final under something of a cloud.

The same cannot be said for Peru, who produced their best performance of the tournament so far as they swept aside Chile in the semi-finals. They narrowly made it through the group stage as they won just once, but they stunned Uruguay on penalties in the quarter-finals and then went one better in the semi-finals as they stormed to a 3-0 victory over a Chile team who had been looking to claim their third consecutive Copa America crown. It was an outstanding result for the Peruvians, but do they have one final shock left in them?

The build-up to this match will be dominated by the fact that these two teams went head-to-head in the group stage, and it did not end well for Peru. Liverpool start Roberto Firmino produced a spectacular no-look finish as the Brazilians raced to a 3-0 lead inside 32 minutes, and by the time the full-time whistle blew they had added a couple more to rub salt in the wounds. It would have been even more too had Gabriel Jesus not failed to convert a late penalty, but 5-0 was still a huge scoreline and it is the reason I am confident that Brazil will be victorious again here.

I am also confident about them winning in convincing fashion too, but I am not sold on the possibility of them matching or bettering that 5-0 hammering they dished out almost two weeks ago. Peru will have learned some harsh lessons from the way that they were dispatched, and there will almost certainly be added focus on the defence because their best chance of winning this match comes from frustrating the hosts and snatching a goal at the other end. This approach may help them keep the score down this time, but I fully expect Brazil to win comfortably and be crowned Copa America champions for the first time since 2007.
