Rafael Benitez remains the bookmakers’ favourite to become the next Celtic manager despite reports claiming he will sign a new deal with Newcastle United this summer.

Celtic turned to former boss Neil Lennon on an interim basis after Brendan Rodgers walked away from the club to become Leicester City manager earlier this year, and although he the Northern Irishman has kept the Hoops on course for an historic ‘treble treble’ it may not be enough to land him the job on a permanent basis for a second time.

Lennon remains a leading contender for the role at 13/5 with Paddy Power, but he does have one man ahead of him in the betting, current Newcastle chief Benitez.

Last summer bitter rivals Rangers turned to the man who captained Liverpool to Champions League glory back in 2005, Steven Gerrard, and reports in recent weeks have suggested that Celtic could now look to top that by appointing the man who master-minded that famous European success.

Benitez’s future as Newcastle boss has been a hot topic ever since he led them back into the Premier League and with his contract expiring this summer there is no shortage of potential suitors.

The Hoops lit up Scottish football when they successfully completed an audacious swoop to make ex-Reds boss Rodgers the manager a couple of years ago and Paddy Power is now just 2/1 that they will top that by making Benitez the next permanent manager of the club.

However, there have been claims that the Spaniard is on the brink of agreeing to extend his stay in the North East and if that happens then Celtic will be forced to look elsewhere.

Former defender David Moyes has once again been linked with the post as he looks to resurrect his managerial career after seeing his stock plummet in recent years, and Paddy Power is 16/5 that he could be given the opportunity to get back on track by Celtic.

Ex-Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea chief Andre-Villas Boas is into 9/1 amid some support for him to take on the roll, while former West Ham United chief Slaven Bilic is now right out at 18/1 despite newspapers also linking him with the Parkhead post.

Chris Hughton is a 19/1 shot following his somewhat controversial sacking by Brighton & Hove Albion at the end of the 2018/19 English Premier League campaign.
