Leigh Copson: Back Artem Dzyuba to score & Russia to beat Cyprus @ 11/10 Paddy Power

Russia have put their opening-night defeat firmly behind them with back-to-back convincing wins to kick-start their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign. Stanislav Cherchesov’s side were beaten 3-1 when they visited Belgium back in March, but they rebounded days later with a comfortable 4-0 win in Kazakhstan and followed that up with an even bigger victory this past weekend, demolishing San Marino 9-0 to move into the second automatic qualifying spot. And with third-place Scotland set to visit Belgium on Tuesday night, Russia have a real chance to strengthen their grip on a top two spot.

Providing the opposition for their fourth qualifying outing are a Cyprus side who opened up with a 5-0 rout of San Marino but have lost both of their fixtures since, then losing 2-0 at home to Belgium before conceding a late-goal to lose 2-0 in Scotland last weekend. The Cypriots did not offer much in that meeting with the Scots before their hosts inevitably decided to make hard work of it, and it is difficult to see Russia being that generous when these two sides go head-to-head here.

I fully expect the hosts to run out comfortable winners here and there are a couple of very tempting options for backing the Russians. For me the most appealing one is getting behind Artem Dzyuba to help fire his national team to victory. The Zenit St Petersburg striker did not enjoy the best of form for his club side this past season, but the international stage has certainly been agreeing with him in recent months.

Dzyuba followed up his goal in Kazakhstan with a sensational four-goal haul as Russia battered San Marino at the weekend, and he has now netted 11 goals in his last 15 appearances for the national team. Granted that four goal-showing does boost the stats, but if you take it away he has been averaging a goal every other game in his country’s colours so he has to be considered a leading contender to score in a victory for the hosts.
