The Chinese edition of the International Champions Cup is the first of the three to start and finish this year, with AC Milan meeting Borussia Dortmund in the curtain-raiser in Guangzhou on Tuesday.

Bayern Munich and AC Milan are the only teams playing two matches in the Chinese series, including against each other, so one of them will almost certainly win it as Arsenal, Dortmund, Inter Milan and Lyon feature just once each.

Arsenal are stopping off on their way home from Australia, where they played two matches in Sydney against the local A-League clubs, and from Shanghai they move on to Beijing for the first of two pre-season games against Chelsea.

The second of those is the FA Community Shield at Wembley, with the Premier League champions being the team Arsenal beat 2-1 in last season’s FA Cup Final at the same venue.

There is also familiarity about facing Bayern as far as the Gunners are concerned, for these clubs have met at home and away in the Champions League in four of the last five seasons.

Three of those were in the round-of-16, Bayern coming out on top each time including last term when they won both matches 5-1. The same scoreline also occurred at the Allianz Arena during the 2015-16 group stage, although Arsenal had previously won 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

Bayern began their preparations early as they bid for a sixth consecutive Bundesliga title, racking up a couple of big wins against minor opposition in early July with 17-year-old Cameroon-born striker Franck Evina bagging a double in both matches.

After contesting the Telekom Cup in Monchengladbach, Carlo Ancelotti’s squad head to Asia to play four matches in total, the Arsenal and AC Milan games in China followed by further International Champions Cup meetings in Singapore with Chelsea and Inter Milan.

Then it’s back home for the Audi Cup, which they host, with their semi-final opponents on August 1 being Liverpool and the following day, depending on the result, Bayern will face either Atletico Madrid or Napoli.

Among the new signings Bayern could field against Arsenal are James Rodriguez, who has joined on a two-year loan from Real Madrid, defender Niklas Sule and midfielders Corentin Tolisso and Sebastian Rudy.
