Spanish Super Cup: Barcelona v Real Madrid Betting Tips Explained

Barcelona and Real Madrid may be the two biggest teams in Spanish football, but this year’s Spanish Super Cup showdown is the first time they have met for this piece of silverware since Real got the better of Barca in the 2012 tie, winning on away goals after the two teams drew 4-4 on aggregate. So who will gain the upper-hand in the first leg at the Camp Nou?

Hosts Barcelona are entering the 2017/18 campaign with a massive cloud hanging over them. One of their attacking triple threat, Neymar, seemingly had enough of playing in the shadow of Lionel Messi and made a mega-money move to Paris St Germain, and that was not what Barcelona needed on the eve of a season where the pressure is on them to reply to Real Madrid’s La Liga-Champions League double in 2016/17. But even without Neymar in the fold, they still boast two of the most dangerous forward players in world football in Messi and Luis Suarez, and of course this is still a talented squad that will almost certainly be in the mix when it comes to all of the major silverware this season.

And for those of you paying attention to pre-season, Barcelona did get the better of Real Madrid in a recent friendly in the United States, winning 3-2 in Miami. And while a friendly win over Los Blancos is not a result that will live in the memory, it has to be one that has affected the confidence of both camps. Barcelona were able to lay down a marker ahead of a campaign in which they will be desperate to reply to Real's La Liga-Champions League double in 2016/17, while Madrid must lift themselves after a pretty disappointing pre-season.

Zinedine Zidane’s side have been less than convincing during their exhibition games in the United States, with respected newspaper Marca accusing the team of lacking concentration and intensity, and there must also be concerns up front because Los Blancos have looked rather lightweight. Alvaro Morata and James Rodriguez have both moved on this summer and talisman Cristiano Ronaldo has been late linking up with the team following his participation in the Confederations Cup. Reports have claimed Ronaldo is aiming to face Barcelona in this first-leg encounter, but it is hard to imagine he will be up to full speed if he does feature for Real. And when you also throw in the fact that key defender Sergio Ramos is not 100% match fit, this Real Madrid team is there for the taking at the Camp Nou.

Barcelona should draw first blood in the first leg and that man Messi is likely to play a goal-scoring role. The Argentinian needed only three minutes to score against Real in Miami, opening his pre-season account in the process, and we all know he loves to grab an El Clasico goal or two – he has scored a record 24 times in this fixture. Messi scoring in the Super Cup first leg would not shock anyone and his goal(s) will give Barca the lead ahead of the return meeting at the Bernabeu.
