Atalanta v Everton Betting Tips Explained

It was an exciting summer for Everton fans as they saw their club splash the cash to bring in several new faces, including returning club hero Wayne Rooney, but the first several weeks of the season have shown they still have a long way to go if they want to close the gap between themselves and English football’s elite clubs. The Toffees are now winless in their last four games in all competitions and they go into this match on the back of consecutive defeats that sandwiched the international break.

A 2-0 defeat at champions Chelsea was followed by a comprehensive 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend, an in all honesty that second scoreline could have been even more convincing had Spurs been more clinical. Afterwards manager Ronald Koeman insisted some of the expectations surrounding his side have been unrealistic, but backed them to show a “good reaction”.

“I know how it works in football,” he told BBC Sport. “If you sign some players they are losing a bit being realistic. Everyone is talking Everton top six but if you know the qualities of the players in the top six it is a challenge. We have enough games coming up to have a good reaction.”

Koeman will be hoping his side show a “good reaction” when they visit Italy this week for their first match in the group stage of the Champions League. Having seen off Ruzomberok and Hajduk Split in qualifying, the Toffees will now face a step up in the quality of opposition. Atalanta began their season with back-to-back losses, but there is no shame in being beaten by Roma and Napoli, and they registered their first victory last weekend with a 2-1 home success against Sassuolo.

Their confidence will be up after that match and I expect them to avoid a return to losing ways here. However, I do not fancy their chances of taking three points either so I recommend backing Everton for another away day stalemate in the Europa League – they have already recorded one draw in this competition when they visited Hajduk Split in the last round of qualifying, and they would probably settle for a draw if it was offered pre-match because points away from home coupled with wins on Merseyside should see them advance to the knockout stage.

I also recommend backing this to be a low-scoring affair. Each of the Toffees’ four previous European games have produced two goals or less and they have so far struggled to fill the void left by Romelu Lukaku’s departure to Manchester United. But on the flip side they have now kept clean sheets in four of their Europa League games up to this point, and Atalanta are hardly free-scoring. I do not expect to see either net bulge much – if at all – on Thursday night, so Under 2.5 Total Goals looks to be a very solid bet for this match.
