Aston Villa vs Birmingham City Betting Tips Explained

Harry Redknapp can take the first step towards receiving a reported £250,000 bonus for saving Birmingham City from relegation by claiming a valuable point from the Second City derby.

The 70-year-old former West Ham and Tottenham manager has been brought in for the last three matches of the season to keep the Blues up after they went into freefall under Gianfranco Zola.

The rot set in after Birmingham’s Hong Kong-based owners sacked Gary Rowett in December and brought in Zola, who in the course of his four months in charge turned the club from being play-off contenders to relegation candidates and resigned after Monday’s loss to Burton Albion.

Going into the weekend three points and two places above the drop zone, Redknapp has arrived insisting he will not be paid a salary by Birmingham, merely a bonus – reported to be £250,000 – if he keeps them in the Championship.

And he could not be starting with a bigger match than the derby against fierce local rivals Aston Villa, whose manager Steve Bruce ironically used to be the Birmingham City manager himself!

With home advantage, Villa are understandably warm favourites but their own form has been incredibly patchy this season.

After Bruce’s arrival in October they won seven out of 11. Then, to begin 2017, they lost eight out of nine. The tide then turned again for Villa with seven victories in eight games. But the run has ended again and they have lost their last two matches 3-1 to play-off hopefuls Fulham and Reading to remain rooted firmly in mid-table.

Last time Redknapp was a Championship manager, he took QPR up via the play-offs. His target is much more modest now, but he is fancied to make an immediate impact on the Birmingham squad and ensure they avoid defeat at Villa Park to boost their hopes of staying in the second tier.
