Arsenal v Norwich City betting tips - Arsenal opposable against Norwich on Saturday night

Neil Roarty 26 Apr 2016

Arsenal are worth opposing at short odds when they take on Norwich City in Saturday evening's live Premier League fixture.

It's been a miserable season for Arsenal. They've blown arguably their best shot at the Premier League title in a decade and were knocked out of every cup competition before the semi-final stage. The only target now for Arsene Wenger's side is the infamous fourth place 'trophy' and even that is starting to look a little insecure.

A run of three league wins in nine matches has seen the Gunners slip to just five points ahead of fifth placed Manchester United and, with the Red Devils having a game in hand and Arsenal still to play Manchester City, it's no guarantee that the gap won't be bridged in the final weeks of the season.

That has piled the pressure on the Gunners and Saturday's live 5.30pm kick off against Norwich City at the Emirates has now become an absolute 'must win' for Wenger's men. They are being well backed to claim the victory and are no bigger than 3/10 with Stan James, with some firms offering odds as short as 1/5 on a home win.

Arsenal have won just 3 of their last 9 league matches
That's a crazy price on a side that have only won three of their last nine league matches and who have dropped points to two of the bottom five clubs in their last three fixtures (Crystal Palace and Sunderland). Only against Watford, Everton and West Brom, three sides who have absolutely nothing left to play for, have Arsenal looked anything like the kind of side that the current odds suggest they are.

Unlike that trio, Norwich City will arrive at the Emirates with everything to play for. The Canaries are currently locked in a three way battle to avoid relegation with Sunderland and Newcastle United and, with both the North East clubs finding some late season form, it's imperative that Alex Neil's men take something from every match from now until the end of the season if they want to stay up.

Norwich's own form makes pretty grim reading, and losses to both Sunderland and Crystal Palace will have been hugely demoralising. However, the three matches prior to those defeats saw the Canaries take seven points from matches with Newcastle, West Brom and Manchester City, so they are capable of picking up big results.

The one problem, however, is that Timm Klose won't be back for the visitors and without him Norwich have struggled defensively. They'll put up a wall and fight for everything but Sebastian Bassong is error prone and his lapses in concentration could be costly against players with the ability of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.

It is probably only through one of those two producing something special that Arsenal will win on Saturday though, as the likes of Olivier Giroud, Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey have been hugely disappointing for some time now. Three of those four will start against Norwich and none will have Neil's defenders unduly worried.

What that means is that we will once again see something of a stalemate between a side looking to defend and pounce on the break and a side looking to attack but without much bite. The possession will be dominated by Arsenal and they will have most attempts on goal but will they score? And, if they do, can they avoid conceding sloppily like they did against Crystal Palace.

It's 11/2 with BetVictor that Saturday's match is drawn and that would be the preferred pick on the win-draw-win market at the prices. However, it's probably better to eschew the result betting completely and instead opt for a bet in the goals market. It's a quite frankly massive 7/4 with William Hill that there are less three scores at the Emirates and the likely pattern of play makes this a must bet.

Arsenal may well sneak a win but Norwich, who don't need the victory, won't go crazy and leave themselves open to a really heavy reverse. Instead it is likely to be a battle of wills in a high pressure environment, which means that mistakes or big moments from star players will decide the outcome. It may well be 1-0 Arsenal (17/2, BetVictor) or 1-1 (12/1, bet365) but there probably won't be many more goals than that.
