Arsenal v Leicester City Betting Tips Explained

Winning the Community Shield is not something supporters will talk about for years to come, but last weekend’s penalty shoot-out win over Chelsea was a welcome result for Arsenal ahead of the big kick-off. Despite being without Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and their two starting centre-backs, the Gunners put in a strong showing against the champions and ran out deserved winners on spot-kicks after summer signing Sead Kolasinac cancelled out a Victor Moses goal, and they will now look to follow that up with an opening-night win in the Premier League.

Big-money summer signing Alexandre Lacazette is expected to make his competitive debut for the Gunners, but the big piece of team news going into Friday night’s match is manager Arsene Wenger’s confirmation that Sanchez will not feature. The Chilean has been linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium for several months now, but Wenger has insisted his absence for this meeting with Leicester is purely down to fitness issues.

“He had a little abdominal strain that he caught on Sunday morning in training, before he came to Wembley,” Wenger said. “He had a scan two days ago and he’s out for a while - we don’t know if it is two weeks or one more week, but he will not be available.”

Wenger also admitted he could be without the services of another of his key attacking players, Ozil, for this one, but the Gunners still pose a major threat going forward and the partnership of Lacazette and Danny Welbeck should prove to be a real handful for the Leicester defence on Friday night – they certainly showed signs of chemistry in that win over Chelsea at the weekend. The Gunners have more than enough about them to beat the Foxes on Friday night, but they will need to score a couple of goals because a clean sheet may not be on the cards too.

Seven of the last nine meetings between these two clubs have seen both teams score and that statistic could become eight of 10 because there are some question marks hanging over the Arsenal defence. Per Mertesacker is unlikely to play after sustaining a massive gash above his eye in the Community Shield game, and he will be joined on the sideline by a suspended Laurent Koscielny. There are also concerns over the fitness of Wenger’s other starting centre-back, Shkodran Mustafi, so this could be a weakened Gunners rear-guard that Leicester can take advantage of to score.

But of course, I am backing Arsenal to make a winning start to their Premier League campaign and I fancy Lacazette’s chances of getting off the mark rather quickly in England’s top flight. The 26-year-old Frenchman is coming off a career-best season that saw him net 28 times in the 2016/17 Ligue 1, and it took the upright to deny him a goal at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. Lacazette can hit the back of the net at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night and give fans a taste of what they can expect the rest of the way this season.
