Arsenal v Cologne Betting Tips Explained

Arsenal are, of course, no strangers to European football having become regular fixtures in the Champions League during the Arsene Wenger era, but it has been quite some time since the Gunners played their continental games on a Thursday night. That is what they must do this season though, after failing to finish in the top four of the 2016/17 Premier League, and they will be eager to make a winning start against Cologne as they look to build some momentum after a rather miserable first month of the 2017/18 campaign.

Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil have stayed put despite ongoing speculation about their future, but the summer transfer window once again saw the club make a healthy profit in the market and that has angered supporters who have seen their club lose ground on their title rivals for several seasons now. A recent 4-0 defeat at Liverpool was the latest low point in a season that has also seen them lose at Stoke City, but the Gunners did stop the rot with a much-needed win over Bournemouth at the weekend – their first competitive success since the season-opening win against Leicester City.

Arsenal will now want to register back-to-back victories for the first time this season when they kick off their Europa League campaign against Cologne on Thursday night, and manager Arsene Wenger has indicated he will name a strong line-up with only a couple of the big names being left out of the starting XI.

“It will be a Premier League team [that faces Cologne],” Wenger told the club’s official website after the 3-0 defeat of Bournemouth. “Some players will come in of course, because many players played twice for the national team, and then again today. So two or three will not be in the squad, but most of them will play.”

So it seems as though Wenger is taking this competition seriously this season and who can blame him because it does, after all, offer another route into the Champions League. They should make a winning start on Thursday night because the opposition are a Cologne side that have made a miserable start to their Bundesliga campaign, losing three straight games and scoring just one goal while conceding seven. A strong Gunners side should have enough about them to overcome the German outfit and collect their first three points in the group.

Olivier Giroud can play his part by finding the back of the net. The Frenchman has slipped down the pecking order this season and there was speculation that he could move on this summer in an attempt to land regular starts, but he has stayed put and he is a man that chips in with goals at important times. Giroud netted the winner against Leicester City on opening night and in his first start o fthe season I am backing the Arsenal man to bag himself a goal
