Leigh Copson: Back Argentina to beat Paraguay & over 2.5 total goals @ 5/4 Paddy Power

Argentina’s start to the 2019 Copa America was a stunning one – but not in a good way. Lionel Messi & Co. dominated Colombia throughout the Group D clash but failed to turn that dominance into goals and were punished when Roger Martinez and Duvan Zapata both struck in the final 20 minutes to hand the Colombian’s a 2-0 victory. That means the pressure is firmly on Argentina to issue an immediate response when they return to action on Wednesday night, but can they bounce back?

Providing the opposition are a Paraguay side who avoided a losing start but cannot take much in the way of credit from the 2-2 draw with minnows Qatar. A routine victory appeared to be on the cards when Oscar Cardozo scored after just four minutes and Derlis Gonzalez doubled their advantage just before the hour mark, but Qatar staged a late fightback thanks to an Almoez Ali strike and a Rodrigo Rojas own goal, and that means the Paraguayans are under pressure to at least take something from this meeting with the Argentinians. So can they?

Argentina’s start was hardly the stuff of dreams, but I believe it would be foolish to recommend anything other than a victory for them here. After all, they hardly produced a poor performance. They dominated proceedings and, for me, simply had a ‘bad day at the office’ in front of goal that prevented them from walking away with the spoils. If Qatar can strike twice against this Paraguayan defence then surely the likes of Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero should enjoy some success too.
