Apollon Limassol v Everton Betting Tips Explained

To say Everton’s Europa League group campaign has been has been shocking would be an understatement. It started in miserable fashion with a 3-0 defeat to Atalanta and never got any better as they followed up a home draw against Thursday’s opponents, Apollon Limassol, with a run of three straight defeats, including a 5-1 thrashing at home to Atalanta. That pathetic run of results has left them bottom of Group E and playing for nothing other than pride here.

So can they salvage some? Everton have enjoyed an upturn in fortunes since it was announced that Sam Allardyce would be taking the reins. Just hours after the news broke they stormed to a 4-0 win at home to West Ham United and, in his first official game in charge, they ran out 2-0 winners at home to Huddersfield Town this past weekend. Allardyce would love nothing more than to make it three wins on the bounce with the club’s first competitive away victory since early August, but I am not convinced that is what we are going to see.

The big reason for that is the massive fixture that awaits them this weekend. The Toffees are making the short trip across Stanley Park to take on neighbours Liverpool on Sunday afternoon and that has to be Big Sam’s priority for this week. The simple truth is this meeting with Apollon Limassol does not matter – it will not see them reach the last-32 and it will hardly be a crisis if they lose.

What are important are points and derby bragging rights as Everton look to haul themselves up the Premier League table, so I expect Allardyce to field a weakened side on Thursday night that Limassol can take full advantage off. The home side are unbeaten at the Tisirion Athltiko Kentro so far this season, winning nine of their 11 competitive fixtures, and they have held both Atalanta and Lyon to draws in front of the home fans in this competition. I believe they can go one better here, beating a second-string Everton side to sign off from the Europa League on a high.

I also fancy the chances of Emilio Jose Zelaya playing a goal-scoring role for Apollon Limassol. The Argentinian striker has bagged a couple of goals in this competition and he goes into this match in fine form having scored three goals in his last two appearances for the Cypriot side. Against what will probably a makeshift Everton defence, he has a great opportunity to keep his purple patch going with another Europa League strike.
