All Premier League clash as Tottenham take on favourites City while United are given Barcelona in UCL

Ben Darvill 15 Mar 2019

Premier League sides make up four of the remaining eight sides in the Champions League, with a number of English clubs at last making it through to the latter-stages of the competition again.

It was the perfect few weeks for English football in the Champions League as Manchester United knocked out PSG in conjunction with Tottenham accounting for Borussia Dortmund, before Manchester City hammered Schalke and Liverpool dismantled Bayern Munich in Germany. With only eight teams left in the competition, English sides represent four of the remaining contenders, and there can be a maximum of three Premier League teams left come the semi-finals following a draw which has kept most of the sides away from one another.

The draw has seen Tottenham given a home tie against Manchester City first up, Manchester United face the mighty Barcelona, Liverpool host Porto, and in the only tie not featuring an English side, Ajax take on Juventus.

The quarter-finals will surely bring a glut of goals, shocks and moments of brilliance, so we would not blame any of the sides for not looking ahead to the semi-finals just yet. However, the passage to the final for all the sides has already been decided, with the winner of Tottenham vs City taking on the victor of Ajax vs Juventus, while Barcelona and Manchester United will battle for the right to play the team progressing from Liverpool and Porto’s clash.

The draw for the latter-stages of the competition has not helped to see a side rise above Manchester City in the betting to win the competition, with Pep Guardiola’s men still the favourites at 2/1 with bet365. Next up come Juventus and Barcelona, who are both 7/2, while Liverpool’s odds have shortened to 4/1 following their draw against arguably the weakest team left in the draw in Porto (100/1). Manchester United have drifted out to 20/1 despite the fact they beat French champions PSG last time out, while Tottenham (25/1) and Ajax (40/1) complete the rest of the draw. Perhaps of all of the sides left in the betting, Liverpool offer the best value right now as they take on Porto and are valued at 4/1 to win the competition. Jurgen Klopp's men hammered Porto in their last meeting, while they looked awesome against Bayern Munich last time out.

With heady-weights PSG, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid already out, this year sees a large English contingent and a few major underdogs too, which makes this year’s competition even more exciting. Will an English side win the Champions League for the first time since 2012?
