Liverpool v Manchester City Betting Tips

It appears to be only a matter of time before Manchester City are crowned Premier League champions. Pep Guardiola’s side boast a 15-point lead at the summit following the 3-1 win over Watford almost a fortnight ago, and they have now dropped just four points through their first 22 games of the 2017/18 campaign, leading to many pundits predicting an ‘invincible’ season for the Eastlands outfit. But will they finally suffer their first defeat when they visit Liverpool on Sunday?

The Reds have maintained their place in the top four thanks to a run of three straight victories that has extended their unbeaten sequence in the top flight to 13 games. Jurgen Klopp’s side have not tasted defeat since the 4-1 humiliation at Tottenham Hotspur back in late October, and the goals have been flowing during this sequence with the Reds scoring at least twice in 10 of those Premier League outings.

Confidence in the camp is high, but can they really become the first team to beat Manchester City in the league this season and avenge the 5-0 hammering they suffered at the Etihad Stadium? I do not see that happening.

While they are in good form right now, their record against the ‘big six’ in the Premier League is not particularly impressive. Liverpool have managed to win just one of their six meetings with English football’s elite so far this season – that 4-0 demolition of Arsenal in late August – and that does not suggest they can beat a Manchester City team that have swept aside just about every team they have faced in the top flight this season.

However, I would not be shocked to see Liverpool claim a share of the spoils. While they have managed just one win against the ‘big six’ this season, Klopp’s record when hosting those clubs is pretty decent with just one defeat coming in 13 games against them at Anfield. And when you add in the fact that City have stumbled on the road recently, scraping past Newcastle United before being held to a goalless draw at Crystal Palace, you have to like the Reds’ chances of becoming only the third team to avoid defeat against Guardiola’s men in the league this season.

And for my second recommendation I suggest backing this to be a high-scoring affair. The addition of Virgil van Dijk will almost certainly bolster Liverpool’s defence in the long run, but they continue to concede goals and that rearguard will be very vulnerable to a Manchester City attack that is loaded with attacking talent. The Reds have been having no problems finding the back of the net themselves though, so both nets should bulge here. The question is how many times?

16 of Liverpool’s last 19 competitive matches and 14 of Manchester City’s last competitive outings have produced Over 2.5 Total Goals, so that looks like being a solid bet for a match involving two teams that have combined for 114 Premier League goals so far this season. However, I am expecting these two teams to draw this match so Over 3.5 Total Goals is the way to go here. It has been a winning bet in three of Liverpool’s last five league games and in four of City’s last six.
