TIME Magazine Person Of The Year betting odds: Colin Kaepernick 2/1 favourite as #TakeTheKnee campaign takes over sport

The #TakeAKnee campaign has been the talk of the sporting world over the past week and therefore it is no surprise to see the bookmakers slashing their odds on the man who started it all – Colin Kaepernick – winning the TIME Magazine Person Of The Year award.

Kaepernick first grabbed the headlines when he sat down for the national anthem prior to a pre-season game in 2016, and throughout the 2017 season more and more players have joined in with the protest against racial inequality in the United States.

That has divided public opinion greatly and the campaign reached a fever pitch this past weekend when NFL players, coaches, owners and officials joined together in a show of unity in the wake of an attack by President Donald Trump, who suggested players should be fired for not standing during the anthem.

“Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out! He’s fired. He’s fired!’” Trump said.

Kaepernick’s initial actions have certainly achieved what he wanted – for people to be talking about the subject of racial inequality in the United States – and William Hill believe the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback could be honoured with the TIME Magazine Person Of The Year award as a result.

The bookmaker has Kaepernick as the 2/1 favourite to win the award with, rather ironically, President Trump next up at 3/1 having scooped the award a year ago.

“Colin Kaepernick has been shunned from a very lucrative career for standing up for what he believes in and a large number of his former colleagues and competitors have followed suit,” William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly told Bettingpro.com.
“It would be quite the irony for him or them to win the TIME Magazine accolade the year after Donald Trump.”

President Trump has been engaged in a verbal war with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in recent weeks so it is somewhat appropriate that he is next in the betting at 4/1, with German chancellor Angel Merkel an 8/1 shot ahead of Russian president Vladimir Putin at 9/1.

Latest William Hill odds:

TIME Magazine Person of the Year 2017: 2/1 Colin Kaepernick/NFL knee takers; 3/1 Donald Trump; 4/1 Kim Jong Un; 8/1 Angela Merkel; 9/1 Vladimir Putin; 14/1 Elon Musk; 14/1 Pope Francis; 14/1 Xi Jinping; 16/1 Barack Obama; 16/1 Hwang Kyo-Ahn; 16/1 Jean Claude Junker; 20/1 Marine Le Pen; 33/1 George R.R. Martin; 33/1 Michelle Obama; 33/1 Serena Williams; 33/1 Tom Brady; 40/1 Ban Ki-Moon; 40/1 Francois Fillon; 66/1 Jeremy Corbyn; 66/1 Theresa May
