Sam Mendes cut to 7/1 to return for Bond 25

David Mackenzie and Denis Villeneuve remain the bookmakers’ favourites to direct the new James Bond movie, but bookmaker William Hill has been forced to slash the odds on Sam Mendes taking the reins once again when production starts in December.

Bond bosses announced on Tuesday night that Danny Boyle had walked away from the job due to “creative differences”, and bookmaker William Hill was quick to install ‘Hell or High Water’ director Mackenzie and ‘Blade Runner 2049’ director Villeneuve as the early favourites at 3/1 and 4/1 respectively.

That was no real surprise, given that both men were previously linked with the director’s job for Bond 25, and while they remain the two front-runners in the betting it is former 007 director Mendes who is attracting plenty of interest.

Mendes enjoyed a highly successful run as director of this famous franchise, earning rave reviews for his work on ‘Skyfall’ and ‘SPECTRE’, but he was not expected to reunite with Daniel Craig one more time before the Bond actor walks away from the role.

However, William Hill punters believe those creative differences that resulted in Boyle quitting could lead to the Bond chiefs turning to a familiar face in Mendes, and as a result the odds on him directing the 25th Bond movie have come in from 10/1 to 7/1.

“A lot of the Bond chat in recent weeks has been about Idris Elba and whether he will replace Daniel Craig once the latter hangs up his tux,” William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly told Bettingpro.com.

“However, there are now more pressing matters at hand and the smart money seems to suggest Sam Mendes may reunite with the franchise and recreate their winning formula.”

Latest William Hill Odds

Who will be the director of Bond 25: 3/1 David Mackenzie; 4/1 Denis Villeneuve; 6/1 Yann Demange; 7/1 Sam Mendes; 8/1 Christopher Nolan; 8/1 Martin McDonagh; 12/1 Ridley Scott; 14/1 Steve McQueen; 16/1 Christopher McQuarrie; 16/1 Danny Boyle; 16/1 JJ Abrams; 50/1 Ken Loach
