Ronda Rousey 1/2 to win singles debut in WWE

Ronda Rousey will have her first televised one-on-one match in WWE on June 17, and bookmaker Unibet expects the former UFC champion to be victorious at the Money In The Bank pay-per-view.

Rousey received rave reviews when she made her in-ring debut in a mixed tag team match at WrestleMania in April, and having recently appeared in some non-televised matches in Europe she is now scheduled to face Nia Jax for the RAW Women’s Championship this weekend.

WWE have received a lot of criticism for fast-tracking the ex-mixed martial artist into a title match so early on in her career, but recent reports have claimed that the company felt it had “no choice” but to put her in the bout.

According to WrestleTalk.com, WWE did not want to put Rousey in the Women’s Money In The Bank ladder match at the event and they did not want their high-profile signing to miss another major event, having been absent for the recent Backlash PPV.

That resulted in them opting for a title match with Jax – the cousin of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson – at Money in The Bank on June 17.

WWE have really booked themselves into a corner when it comes to Rousey and the question is now that they have fast-tracked her into the title picture, will the company continue to build Rousey’s air of invincibility by actually having her leave the event as champion?

Some creative booking would allow Rousey to win the bout without claiming the title – WWE belts do not change hands on count-outs and disqualifications – and therefore it is no surprise to see bookmaker Unibet going 1/3 that the former UFC star is victorious, with Jax 2/1 to inflict a first defeat on the newcomer.

The firm is also allowing customers the chance to bet on the Method Of Victory and a Submission finish is currently the favourite at 11/25, which is no shock given that the armbar is Rousey’s trademark move in both legitimate combat sports and the world of WWE.

A pinfall finish is 17/4, but for me the most appealing option – if the match does go ahead – is backing the bout to end by Any Other Method at 6/5.

If the WWE are not planning on putting the belt on Rousey at Money In The Bank, and they do not want her to lose this early in her career, then some sort of count-out finish or non-finish (outside interference perhaps) will provide them with a ‘get out of jail’ card that keeps the ex-UFC champ strong and keeps the belt on Jax.
