Bookmaker William Hill has gone 10/1 about Daniel Craig quitting his role as James Bond following the announcement that wife Rachel Weisz is expecting the couple’s first child.

Craig received a lukewarm reaction when it was first announced that he would replace Pierce Brosnan as 007 in a series reboot, but his performance in Casino Royale earned much praise and the franchise as gone from strength to strength with the 50-year-old carrying the licence to kill.

Franchise records for Domestic Opening Weekend, Domestic Box Office and Worldwide Box Office have been smashed during his tenure as Bond, with Skyfall leading the way, and despite previously claiming he would rather ‘slit his wrists’ then play the super-spy one more time, Craig was widely expected to return in the role for ‘Bond 25’ which is set for release in November 2019.

However, could the arrival of a new child throw a spanner in the works?

“Daniel and I are so happy – we’re going to have a little human,” his wife, actress Rachel Weisz, announced this week. “We can’t wait to meet him or her. It’s all such a mystery.”

So could the impending new arrival lead to Craig ending his run as Bond?

Bookmaker William Hill has gone 10/1 that he steps down before filming for ‘Bond 25’ gets underway, while the firm has gone 33/1 that the actor and his wife pay tribute to 007 by having a son and naming it James.

“It is no secret that the producers had to twist Daniel Craig’s arm to stay on as Bond and this announcement could just dampen his enthusiasm even more,” William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams told Bettingpro.com.

And if Craig does walk away from the role, the big question is who will fill his big shoes?

The market has seen many favourites in recent years, but at this moment in time it is James Norton who is heading the way at 2/1 with Tom Hardy considered a 3/1 pick ahead of 4/1 Jack Huston.

“The odds suggest that James Norton needs to dust off the dinner jacket as he might need it sooner than he thinks,” Rupert added.

Idris Elba, a one-time favourite for the role, is currently 6/1 alongside Tom Hiddleston, while the firm has gone 20/1 that Henry Cavill swaps Superman’s cape for a licence to kill and 25/1 that Andrew Lincoln ditches his role as Rick Grimes on ‘The Walking Dead’ and becomes the next 007.
