Will John Oliver turn up at WWE WrestleMania? Bookies smack down the odds!

Television presenter John Oliver set his sights on the world of professional wrestling last week as he criticised WWE for its treatment of its performers – but could that lead to him showing up at the company’s showpiece event, WrestleMania, on Sunday night?

During his latest episode of HBO show ‘Last Week Tonight’, Oliver took WWE to task for the fact it continues to treat performers as ‘independent contractors’ despite the fact that the company has full control over where and when talent can perform.

“While the character Vince is an asshole, it's important to know that the real Vince is also an asshole,” Oliver told viewers. “And many fans legitimately hate him because, while the WWE has made him a billionaire, many wrestlers say he's treated them terribly.”

Oliver went on to explain that performers do not receive health insurance from the company due to their employment status and went as far as branding the company “morally subterranean”.

“There have actually been multiple GoFundMe campaigns to cover medical and funeral expenses for wrestlers, which fans have stepped up for. Which is heartwarming, but frankly fans shouldn’t be shouldering that responsibility,” Oliver continued.

“Here’s how bad it is. Even the NFL, for all its massive faults, now offers players health reimbursement accounts and have established a legacy fund for older players that might be dealing with health issues. When you’ve lost the moral high ground to the NFL, you are morally subterranean.”

The segment has received a mixed response from the wrestling world, with those outside the company supporting his comments while others within the WWE ranks have leapt to the company’s defence, but could this all lead to the British-born TV star making an appearance at this weekend’s WrestleMania show at MetLife Stadium just outside of New York?

WWE responded with a statement “refuting every point in his one-sided presentation”, adding that “John Oliver simply ignored the facts” while highlighting it’s “comprehensive, long-standing Talent Wellness program”.

The statement went on to invite Oliver to WrestleMania this Sunday in order for him “to learn more about our company” – but will the ‘Last Week Tonight’ show host accept the invite and put in an appearance at the WWE’s equivalent of the Super Bowl?

Bookmaker Unibet is offering odds on it and if the firm is correct, Vince McMahon & Co. should not hold their collective breaths.

While Oliver is 8/5 to make an appearance at WrestleMania, it is 11/25 that he snubs the invite.
