Geraint Thomas into 5/2 for Sports Personality of the Year success after Tour de France win

Cycling star Geraint Thomas has seen the odds on him winning BBC Sports Personality of the Year slashed following his surprise victory in the 2018 Tour de France.

Thomas has been a supporting rider at this race in recent years, playing a role in helping Team Sky team-mate Chris Froome win the Tour de France in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, and he was expected to fill that role this time around.

However, Team Sky’s plans for the 2018 race swung in his favour when he won the 11th and 12th stages to claim the leader’s yellow jersey, and the 32-year-old did not let his team down as he finished one minute and 51 seconds clear of Dutchman Tom Dumoulin, with team-mate Froome finishing in third place.

“It's mental,” Thomas told reporters afterwards. “Whenever anybody says I've won the Tour de France, I've just got to pinch myself. It's going to take a while to sink in.

“I've maybe got a bit more used to it than Saturday - that was just raw emotion. I'd never thought about the outcome; it was just about the process and not getting carried away. To suddenly then realise I'd won, I didn't know how to react and it all just came pouring out. It's just insane. It's crazy.”

A British rider has now won the Tour de France in six of the past seven years and with his victory in 2018 Thomas has followed in the footsteps of 2012 winner Sir Bradley Wiggins and four-time winner Chris Froome.

But will he follow in the footsteps of the likes of Wiggins, Mark Cavendish and Sir Chris Hoy by becoming the latest cyclist to claim the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award?

Bookmaker bet365 has slashed his odds all the way into 5/2 following his Tour de France success, making him the second favourite at this time, but England striker Harry Kane remains the favourite, at Even-money, after he won the Golden Boot award at this summer’s World Cup.

World heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua is out at 12/1 as he prepares for a return to action at Wembley Stadium in September, while Lewis Hamilton is also priced at 12s as he bids to become the first British driver to win five Formula 1 drivers’ titles.

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is a 22/1 shot following his impressive performances at the World Cup, and he is joined on that price by Lizzy Arnold, who won gold in the skeleton at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
