Ellen White played a starring role in England’s run to the semi-finals of the Women’s World Cup, but has her goal-scoring exploits in France made her a leading contender for BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2019?

Football may be a massive deal in England, but it has only ever produced five winners of the annual BBC award and none of those footballers have been female.

So could that all change after the Lionesses’ captured the hearts of a nation at the World Cup?

Ellen White has quickly become an overnight sensation with her purple patch of goals and ‘goggles’ celebration.

She made a flying start to the competition by netting what proved to be the winner against Scotland, and after drawing a blank against Argentina she responded in impressive fashion by netting twice in a victory over the Japanese.

The goals did not dry up in the knockout stage either as he netted in each of England’s 3-0 wins in the last-16 and the quarter-finals, and she then made it six goals in six appearances at the World Cup by finding the back of the net in the 2-1 defeat to the United States – and it would have been seven in six had she not been cruelly denied by the tightest of VAR offside calls.

White will certainly return to England as one of its newest footballing stars, but could it also make her a serious contender to become the first female footballer to ever win BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2019?

William Hill is not ruling it out at 14/1, but she remains behind several other sports men and women in the betting, with England and Manchester City star Raheem Sterling considered the 5/1 favourite due to not only his performances on the pitch, but also his actions off the pitch in tackling racism.

Sprinter Dina Asher-Smith is next up at 7/1 after making a blistering start to the athletics season, while Formula 1 ace Lewis Hamilton is an 8/1 shot having already opened up a commanding lead in this season’s Drivers’ Championship as he looks to be crowned world champion for the sixth time in his career.

And at 12/1, England cricketer Joe Root is now the only other person shorter than footballer White.
