David Mackenzie 3/1 favourite to direct Bond 25 after Danny Boyle quits over ‘creative differences’

David Mackenzie has been installed as the bookmakers’ favourite to direct the new James Bond movie following the announcement that Danny Boyle has stepped down from the role.

Boyle was set to take over from Sam Mendes as 007’s director when production on the 25th instalment of the famous spy saga begins in December, but that will no longer be the case after movie bosses announced he had walked away from the role in a very brief statement.

“Michael G. Wilson, Barbara Broccoli and Daniel Craig today announced that due to creative differences Danny Boyle has decided to no longer direct Bond 25,” it read.

Now all eyes are on who will take the reins when Daniel Craig plays the famous spy one final time, and the bookmakers are not expecting the return of Mendes despite his success as director of both ‘Skyfall’ and ‘SPECTRE’.

Mendes, at this time, is considered a 10/1 outsider for the role, with ‘Hell or High Water’ director David Mackenzie and ‘Blade Runner 2049’ director Denis Villeneuve considered the leading contenders at 3/1 and 4/1 respectively with William Hill.

“David Mackenzie and Denis Villeneuve were being considered when Danny Boyle got the gig and they will perhaps be the first names that the producers of Bond 25 will turn to,” William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly told Bettingpro.com.

Yann Demange, who earned critical acclaim in his directorial film debut with ‘71’, is next up at 6/1, while former Batman director Christopher Nolan is 8/1 to take on the challenge of directing another huge franchise by signing on for Bond 25.

But could Boyle still make a dramatic U-turn and return to the role? It looks unlikely at odds of 16/1.

Latest William Hill Odds

Who will direct Bond 25: 3/1 David Mackenzie; 4/1 Denis Villeneuve; 6/1 Yann Demange; 8/1 Christopher Nolan; 8/1 Martin McDonagh; 10/1 Sam Mendes; 12/1 Ridley Scott; 14/1 Steve McQueen; 16/1 Christopher McQuarrie; 16/1 Danny Boyle; 16/1 JJ Abrahms; 50/1 Ken Loach
