Big backing puts bookies under pressure to slash Bohemian Rhapsody star’s Oscar odds

Bookmakers have been forced to slash their odds on Rami Malek winning Best Actor at next year’s Oscars after a huge flurry of support for the ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ star.

Malek, best known previously for his role in hit television series Mr Robot, has been earning rave reviews for his portrayal of legendary rockstar Freddie Mercury and that reaction has resulted in a wave of money for him to land an Oscar in 2019.

75% of bets on the Best Actor market have been for the 37-year-old to claim the prestigious award and, as a result, he is now just 5/1 to win the award for the first time.

However, despite that support bookmaker Ladbrokes has resisted the temptation to make Malek the favourite.

Bradley Cooper is currently the 10/11 favourite as ‘A Star is Born’ continues to receive glowing responses, while 2013 nominee Christian Bale is the 4/1 second favourite for his portrayal of former US Vice President Dick Cheney in ‘Vice’.

“Bradley Cooper is Under Pressure in the battle for Best Actor with Rami Malek proving a popular pick with punters,” Ladbrokes’ Alex Apati told Bettingpro.com.
