Anthony Joshua being beaten to BBC Sports Personality of the Year by Mo Farah will go down as one of the biggest shocks in the history of the annual award, according to bookmaker William Hill.

World heavyweight boxing champion Joshua had been William Hill's overwhelming odds-on favourite to win the award for several months, but he did not even place in the top three as 25/1 third favourite Farah was named the winner ahead of Jonathan Rea (16/1 to finish in the top three) and Jonnie Peacock (12/1 to finish in the top three).

“The last time a shock like this happened at Sports Personality of the Year was when 20/1 shot Ryan Giggs beat 1/10 favourite Jenson Button to the award,” William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly told Bettingpro.com.
“This is as much of a shock as that and 77% of all bets placed on this market were for Joshua. Wow!!!”

2018 is a big year for sport and Anthony Joshua is the 4/1 favourite to win Sports Personality of the Year in 2018 ahead of Lewis Hamilton at 6/1 and Andy Murray at 10/1.

With the World Cup taking place in 2018, England striker Harry Kane is 16/1 to win the trophy, with Jamie Vardy a 33/1 shot ahead of with Jordan Pickford and Gary Cahill 50/1.

Ahead of the Winter Olympics, Elise Christie is 20/1 and Evie Muirhead is 33/1.
