Can Sri Lanka put England under some real pressure with a win, or will South Africa claim only their second victory of the tournament? Read on for our best bets for this World Cup clash.

Sri Lanka vs South Africa Predictions

Sri Lanka come into their clash with South Africa with a real chance of taking a shock place in the semi-finals of the 2019 Cricket World Cup despite failing to ever really come to the party on a consistent basis. Two wins, two defeats and two no results has seen the side onto six points for the campaign so far and despite crushing defeats at the hands of New Zealand and Australia, Sri Lanka have been able to beat both Afghanistan and, most impressively, England. Now, Sri Lanka must look to utilise that victory last Friday by defeating a South Africa side in awful form. The Proteas meanwhile have been woeful this tournament as they have found wins very tough to come by. A single win in seven have come along with five defeats and a No Result. The three points they have picked up means they sit in ninth in the table, five short of England in fourth with only four points left for the side to pick up, meaning they are already out of the running to take a last-four berth. A loss to Pakistan last time out came as they struggled to 259/9 in 50 overs, with their 49 run loss one that just sums up their woes this year, with average bowling not backed up by their failing batsmen. Now if they are to regain some semblance of pride, they must win their remaining games, or they face the prospect of finishing a single place off the bottom of the table.

Match Winner

This is one that could go either way, with neither of the two teams in much form this summer. Sri Lanka do boast some momentum following their shock win over England, but their problems have so often stemmed from their inability to bat and bowl well in conjunction with one another. Their batting unit struggled against England and they were indebted to their bowlers getting them out of jail after they skittled England for just over 200 runs. Against South Africa the emphasis will be on putting on a strong score to start with to put this struggling South African batting lineup under pressure, or, if they are batting second, to ensure they do not lose regular wickets in a run chase. The Proteas meanwhile will be desperate to see Quinton de Kock, Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis firing with the bat, while Kagiso Rabada and Imran Tahir will be the main men for the side with the ball as they look to ensure their nation do not slump to their sixth loss in eight games. Honestly, despite only picking up three points this year, we are backing South Africa for victory. The side have no pressure on them to make it out of the group as it is now mathematically impossible for them to do so, while Sri Lanka have a real chance to pick up two points and draw level with England in fourth. This pressure is not something they will have felt at the current World Cup, with their best performance of the competition coming against England in a game when they were massive underdogs. We feel South Africa will go out and play with a bit more freedom than they have done, and we think they will add to their five wins in their last five ODI’s against Sri Lanka, with the side winning 16 of their last 18 encounters with Sri Lanka.

Top Sri Lanka Bowler

The exploits of Lasith Malinga against England was something that ultimately got the side over the line in a game they simply had to win. The veteran may not be quite as dangerous as he once was but he still possess some superb ball placement and a Yorker that is incredibly tough to play, while going for just 43 runs for four wickets against the Three Lions is an incredibly impressive tally considering how powerful England’s batting lineup can be. Dhananjaya de Silva also looked very good last time out as he accounted for Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid in a time in which Sri Lanka had to take wickets, with his exploits something that put England under a huge amount of pressure, something they ultimately collapsed under. De Silva is one man we feel offers decent value at 7/2, while Malinga is shorter at 5/2. While the bowling of de Silva under pressure may be something that sways many, his three wickets on Friday only took his tally for the World Cup up to five, while Malinga stands at the top on his own with eight in four matches. For this reason we feel backing the veteran is the way to go as he looks to swell Sri Lanka’s points tally for the campaign.
