Sri Lanka host England in the 1st Test on Tuesday, November 6, in what should be an incredibly interesting start to their three-match Test series. The touring side are looking to back up their series win over India in England with another triumph, while Sri Lanka are desperately looking for form after a torrid run.

Sri Lanka vs England betting tips

Sri Lanka and England renew hostilities for the show piece of the latter’s tour, with the three-match Test series one that should be incredibly exciting. England arrive in far better form than their opponents after winning the ODI series 3-1, before they won the one-off T20 in comfortable circumstances.

The Three Lions revert back to the oldest format of the game for the first time since their five-match series with India ended in a 3-1 win for the side. Since then, all time leading scorer Alastair Cook has retired, leaving England with huge question marks over both opener spots, with Keaton Jennings struggling massively against India, while the other spot is set to be battled over by the likes of Rory Burns and co.

For Sri Lanka, this is another chance to arrest their poor run of form. Of their last eight matches in all competitions, Sri Lanka have won just once, with defeats at the hands of Bangladesh and Afghanistan particularly damaging for the nation. Their display in the final ODI, which they won by a thumping 219 runs, showed the ability they have in the squad, but as the game was a real dead rubber, the players knew they had nothing to lose, enabling them to go out and play with some real freedom. In the Test series though, there will be a lot of pressure on the home team, and the question must be asked, can they deal with the expectation of the nation?

With the form of the two sides in mind, England are the obvious choice for victory. A Test series win over India in England is very impressive, and boasting the scalp of the top ranked Test side going into their next cluster of games will see the side very confident.

However, it must be kept in mind that the conditions in England are very different to those in Sri Lanka. The hosts will look to play with a number of spinners, and they may even choose to open the bowling with two spin bowlers, presenting England with a problem as they have often been undone by spin in the past. In the ranks of the Three Lions there are a number of impressive spinners including Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali, and they will likely be given a lot of time with the ball in hand as there is not as much help for the likes of James Anderson and Stuart Broad, meaning there could be some shuffling of the England bowling lineup, with a big name potentially facing the axe.

This all makes the first test difficult to call, meaning there is good value in this one. Indeed, neither side is odds-on for a victory in the first Test, giving good reason to back either outfit if you have a hunch over one of them winning the first Test. However, while the first Test will be tough to call, we feel that backing England in the Series Winner market offers good value at 9/5 with Unibet, as they are a team full of talent and confidence.

As far as the opening Test goes, we feel backing the top England bowler to be Adil Rashid is an intelligent move, as he will likely get a lot of backing from captain Joe Root, with the spinner showing his technical ability against India in the summer.
