Can India begin their World Cup preparations with a win, or will New Zealand get a huge win over a side that are earmarked as one of the favourites to win the competition this year? Read on for our predictions and best bets for this match.

India vs New Zealand Predictions

The big games keep on coming in the build-up to the 2019 Cricket World Cup as India take on New Zealand in what should be a cracking clash between the pair. The last time these two teams faced off against one-another in an ODI clash, India won the game by 35 runs to cap off a 4-1 series win in New Zealand, while the series before that saw India win the series 2-1. Clearly, India come into this one as the form side in this fixture meaning they have a rather sizeable mental advantage over their opponents, who will still be looking for answers following that 4-1 home thrashing at the hands of their opponents where they rarely threatened to compete on the series scoreboard.

As per usual for India, Virat Kohli is the favourite in the match betting for Indian top batsman. His ODI average stands at 59.58, while his average stood at an awesome 133.56 last year as he continued his awesome form. However, an average of less than half this (55.55) is definitely not one people will turn their noses up at, but it is a dramatic fall from last year, while his average of 54.56 in England and Wales is one of his lowest by country as he has apparently been hindered by his struggles against the ball in the UK. However, this does not stop us from backing the captain as we feel he does offer fairly good value, while the likes of Rohit Sharma (10/3), Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul (both 7/2) can often be quite hit and miss, with the pace, swing and spin of England’s attack likely to cause some real problems. MS Dhoni is always a decent bet at 7/1, but the fact he comes in so far down the order can mean that he may appear with only five overs to go, while his innings have been categorised as slower and more measured of late, with the wicket-keeper scoring at a far slower as his strike rate currently stands at 78.23 in comparison to 135.71 when he started in the Indian ODI team 15 years ago. With this in mind, we think backing Kohli is the right way to go as the captain did average an impressive 63.67 when he last played in England.

For New Zealand, this is a huge chance for the side to prove that they can shirk their tag of bridesmaid this year. Too many World Cups and big events have come and gone without the Black Caps really making their mark on things and this is not for a lack of trying or ability, with the side boasting a wealth of riches in both batting and bowling, but we think this is their best chance as the side currently boast some incredible players. Captain Kane Williamson comes in at 11/4, while Ross Taylor, who is currently averaging 74.13 in 2019 following an awesome average of 91.29 in 2018, comes in at 7/2 top top score and he is our man to back here. Four fifties and a century in 11 innings sees Taylor come into this as an incredibly in-form batsmen, and he will look to add to the 593 runs he has scored this year with yet another telling tally. Of course, backing New Zealand in any capacity must be something one does with a pinch of salt as they were awful against India the last time these two sides came together. However, with their strong batting lineup and impressive bowling unit coupled with the fact England’s conditions are similar to New Zealand’s means this could yet be their year.
