Can England take another step closer to the semi-finals of the World Cup, or will Sri Lanka spring a huge surprise on their opponents? Read on for our best bets for this World Cup clash.

England vs Sri Lanka Predictions

What a massive show it was from England on Tuesday as they fully took the shackles off in a batting performance that saw the tournament hosts hammer Afghanistan in a supremely impressive showing. A score of 397/6 from their 50 overs came courtesy of a massive score of 148 from Eoin Morgan as the England captain smashed 17 6’s in his innings to put their opponents to the sword. Prior to this, England had beaten South Africa, Bangladesh and the West Indies, with their sole defeat at the hands of Pakistan a distant memory now. Sri Lanka meanwhile have been incredibly poor, with a single win over Afghanistan coming in incredibly nervy circumstances, while they have lost to New Zealand and Australia, and they were consigned to No Results against Pakistan and Bangladesh as the English summer struck yet again. Points wise, England currently top the table with eight points from five games, seeing the side hold a three point advantage over Bangladesh in fifth. Sri Lanka meanwhile have four points from five games and they trail fourth-placed India by three points with just four games remaining.

Match Winner

In this one we can only really go one way. Sri Lanka may have picked up a big win over England in their last ODI game but this seems to have been more a flash in the pan against England and in their recent history as Sri Lanka have won just three of their last 16, with one No Result and 15 losses in this time. Indeed, they were beaten comfortably by England in their five-match series as they went down 3-1 to their opponents. England meanwhile have performed very well in white-ball cricket recently with just four defeats in their last 23 games along with 16 wins and three No Results validating why they sit at the top of the ODI rankings. With the form of the two in mind we feel England warrant being the big favourites due to their form and the fact home conditions favour them so much. If Sri Lanka were to win this one then it would be up there with one of the great shocks due to their torrid form, but we feel England will add another loss to Sri Lanka’s tally on Friday.

To Score A Fifty

England’s performance against Afghanistan saw a number of their top batsmen star. Eoin Morgan was the big performer as he smashed his way to a century, while Joe Root scored runs yet again with another impressive knock that took him to second in the runs scoring charts. However, Root is currently going at odds-on to score a fifty in this one, while Jonny Bairstow, who scored 90 last time out and was very unfortunate not to go onto three-figures, is currently evens to knock a fifty and that is the direction we are going in for this one. The opener is currently averaging an impressive 47.17 in ODI cricket, and he will be confident against a Sri Lanka side that have struggled massively this summer.

#YourCall tips

Coral are currently offering a tasty looking bet at odds of 10/3 for Root to score a fifty, Morgan to hit a six and Jofra Archer to take 2+ wickets. The batting exploits of Root have been clearly for all to see this summer as he is currently averaging a magnificent 91.75 after four games and he continued his superb run with a score of 88 against Afghanistan last time out. Morgan made sure it was raining sixes last time out as he smashed a World Cup record of 17 sixes in an innings to go to the top of the six hitting charts at the tournament at the time of writing as he made beating the boundary look very easy. Archer also starred last time out as he once again snared three wickets against Afghanistan. Archer’s 12 wickets in five matches sees the quick going at over two wickets a game as he continues to provide an incredibly fast and dangerous threat from one end. The trio have all excelled at the World Cup and we feel they will do it all over again on Friday against a Sri Lanka side that look entirely beatable.
