England vs South Africa Predictions

Well here we go. Thursday May 30th brings with it the first game of the 2019 Cricket World Cup seeing England host South Africa in the opener at The Oval. The two come together amongst the favourites to win the tournament with hosts England the current favourites, while South Africa are fourth favourites with many of the bookies. While England will be desperate to start their own World Cup with a win, the Proteas will feel this is a superb chance to put down a marker immediately, with any win over England a very big one.

Warm-up games wise, England come into this one with a win and a loss, with that defeat to Australia one in which many of their first team players did not feature, with their return seeing the side trounce Afghanistan by nine wickets on Monday. For South Africa, a comfortable win over Sri Lanka was followed by a no result against the West Indies, although the Proteas had been cruising at 95/0 after 12.4 overs with a strong total on the cards.

South Africa do offer fairly good value at 7/4 to win this one as they have a great chance to battle England as the big underdogs. However, even though England are 1/2 to win this one, they are the side we feel will get the points from the opener as they boast two victories over the Proteas in their last three games while their home advantage sees the Three Lions as the big favourites.

Delving into the betting shows that top batsman wise Joe Root of England is 11/4 and their favourite to top score, while Quinton de Kock is 3/1 to be the main man for South Africa in the opener. However, there are a lot of great batsmen across both sides, and while we like Root and de Kock, we think any of Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy or Eoin Morgan could outscore the former, while the return to form for Hashim Amla along with impressive performances from Faf du Plessis means de Kock will likely not be alone in scoring runs. This is why we are unlikely to look to back any of the players in the opener as a World Cup is something that does do odd things to some players. Instead, we are looking to make the most out of William Hills #YourOdds section, with odds of 5/2 on Bairstow and Buttler notching over five combined 6’s in the game. 116 6’s for Buttler in 108 innings along with 51 6’s in 57 innings for Bairstow shows that both players are are adept at hitting the big shots, while the form of the pair also has us confident they will stick around for an elongated period of time, which generally sees the batsmen go big a number of times.

Our final tip of the preview sees us backing Joe Root and Faf du Plessis. Root has continued to score runs consistently in recent matches including a solid 29 not out in his last game against Afghanistan as he notched three fours in a fluent display. Du Plessis meanwhile impressed massively against Sri Lanka the last time he made it out to the middle as he clocked 88 from 69 balls including seven 4’s and four 6’s as he found the boundary rope seemingly with ease. Therefore, we are looking to back the pair to hit the rope often in their respective innings, with these two of the finest and most fluent players in the game today.
