Australia favourites to embarrass England and take Ashes series 3-1

Australia produced another strong display at Old Trafford as Tim Paine’s men retained the Ashes as they went 2-1 in the series up with a single Test left to play.

Despite the heroics of Ben Stokes at Headingley last month, the Ashes were ruthlessly snatched away from England as Australia retained the urn with victory at Old Trafford. Needing to bat out the final day to draw the Test and keep the series at 1-1 with a Test still to play, England did not ever really look like they would get near the close of play without losing all 10 wickets. Resuming on the final day two wickets down, England made it to tea with Jos Buttler and Craig Overton frustrating the away side but, in typical Aussie fashion, Paine’s men ran through England soon after tea with Joe Root and his side left having to watch the Aussies celebrating on the pitch.

The loss, by 185 runs, was another comprehensive one for England as Steve Smith’s batting masterclass along with the Three Lions’ own struggles mean they were well beaten, with their inability to get anywhere near to matching Smith’s scores the real killer for them.

Now, they will look to salvage what little pride they have left as they go to the Oval for the fifth and final Test. However, the bookies don’t seem overly impressed by their prospects, with the Aussies the favourites at Evens with Ladbrokes, while England are 6/4 with the bookie, while a draw is 5’s.

England have since named an unchanged squad for the final Test and they will be desperate to see their batsmen, and Root in particular, find runs, while their bowlers need to step up and give more help to Stuart Broad, who has bowled beautifully throughout the series and has not deserved to end up on the losing side this series.
