Today’s Best Bet: Friday, January 11

Ben Darvill: Back Colin Munro to top score for New Zealand against Sri Lanka @ 5/2 with Ladbrokes

New Zealand host Sri Lanka for the final time on the latter’s tour, with a clear and very large disparity between the two sides evident. New Zealand have romped to series wins in the Tests (1-0) and victory in the ODI’s (3-0), and they can now make it a clean sweep with a triumph in the one-off T20 on Friday.

The Black Caps have been steadily improving over the last few years to the point at which they can now realistically beat any side in the cricketing world, regardless of the format. New Zealand currently sit in third-place in the Test and ODI rankings after their series wins over Sri Lanka, and the only format in which they are apparently languishing behind is in the T20’s, where they are sixth in the world, 26 rating points behind Pakistan at the top. Of course, this ranking should be taken with a pinch of salt, as they are a very strong outfit in the shortest format of the game, able to beat any side regardless of their ranking.

Sri Lanka on the other hand languish in ninth-place in the rankings, behind the likes of the struggling West Indies, and an Afghanistan outfit that are still something of an up and coming side. Clearly, Sri Lanka are nowhere near the force they once were, with the team in turmoil of late, with poor result followed by poor result, with their neither their batting nor their bowling anything like the Sri Lankan sides of old.

With this in mind, we feel that backing a New Zealander is the way to go, with the fortunes of the two nations currently at entirely opposite ends of the spectrum. The likes of Martin Guptill (5/2), Ross Taylor (4/1) and Henry Nicholls (8/1) are tempting when looking to back a Black Caps’ batsman, but the only player we think can be backed to top score is Colin Munro, who is 5/2 with Ladbrokes. Munro enjoyed an outstanding 2018 in T20’s, with the batsman smashing 500 runs in 12 innings. Munro was able to remain very consistent as he was scoring at an average of 45.45 with a strike rate of 178.57, while he notched a high score of 104, with this century all the more impressive due to the limited overs and fast-paced style of T20 internationals. With form like that, it makes it tough to look past Munro, and we are backing him to take his form from 2018 and kick on this year.
