Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle betting tips: Two against the field for Wednesday's competitive handicap contest

Brian Healy assesses the potential runners for the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle on day two of the Cheltenham Festival, and he picks out two against the field to be interested in in Wednesday's race.

The sixth and penultimate race on the second day of the Cheltenham Festival is the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle which goes to post at 4.50pm.

A race restricted to four-year olds who may not quite be good enough to contest the Grade One Triumph Hurdle on Friday for the same age group, this two mile contest nevertheless is never short on quality, and a classy maximum field of 22 rivals will face the starter for this contest which boasts a first prize of £45,000.

Also known as the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle, this is a race in which Paul Nicholls invariably does well in with his runners, and the Ditcheat handler has won the three times which includes back-to-back wins in 2015 and 2016 with Qualando and Diego Du Charmil.

Brian Healy looks through the field of possible runners in this contest, and he picks out two against the field who could go well.

Given Paul Nicholls’ record in the race, FRIEND OR FOE (8/1, William Hill) makes plenty of appeal, and the Walk In The Park gelding could be worth keeping onside having looked a very useful prospect when winning on his debut at Taunton back in December.

Twice-raced in France for Emmanuel Clayeux prior to joining forces with the Ditcheat yard, he produced a very solid first start for Nicholls, beating Zafar by just over one length having made all the running.

He looks sure to have more to offer, and while there is a slight sweat on whether he’ll qualify for the race having not run since, his mark of 128 is very workable and he can take advantage of his rating to go close if he does line up.

The form of his win might only be ordinary, but he certainly has the scope for better and it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see him posting a big run for his powerful yard who knows what it takes to win this contest.

CHIEF JUSTICE (16/1, William Hill) has some very useful form to his name in Ireland, winning his first two starts over hurdles for Gordon Elliott having shown a good level over timber and on the flat for Richard Fahey previously.

The Acclamation gelding chased home the smart Cracker Factory on his hurdles debut prior to opening his account at Worcester next time; he subsequently joined the Elliott team where he won his first three starts for the Meath handler before twice finishing in the frame in Listed and Graded company, which includes behind Cracker Factory again at Wetherby,

Also a runner-up at Leopardstown behind Rocky Blue in the Knight Frank Juvenile Hurdle, he posted a Grade Three success over Coeur Sublime at Fairyhouse; and he lost no caste in defeat when finishing fifth behind Sir Erec back at Leopardstown in the Spring Juvenile Hurdle.

A mark of 139 as he steps into a handicap probably requires that he finds another jolt of improvement; but he could prove equal to the task and he looks sure to go well if lining up.
