World Boxing Super Series predictions & betting tips: All the betting information you need for the World Boxing Super Series

Leigh Copson 27 Oct 2017

World Boxing Super Series predictions for the tournament taking place between September 2017 and May 2018. Which super-middleweight and cruiserweight fighters will lift the Muhammad Ali Trophy? Read on for all of our free predictions and betting tips for the World Boxing Super Series.

What Is The World Boxing Super Series?

Professional boxing is not renowned for holding tournaments but the World Boxing Super Series will follow in the footsteps of the Super Six World Boxing Classic that took place several years ago.

The format is rather simple – there will be a super-middleweight tournament and a cruiserweight tournament with each competition featuring eight men ranked in the top 15 of their respective weight classes. They will fight in a single elimination format – quarter-finals, semi-finals and final – to determine the two champions and the winners will lift the Muhammad Ali Trophy.

“It’s a tournament in the sport,” said promoter Kalle Sauerland. “It’s an invitation tournament. No one’s signed up [to the promotions involved] afterwards, the belts are in and out and if they lose they’re out. It’s similar to other sports. There’s no delays in this tournament if fighters are injured, the tournament moves on.”

The 16 fighters involved will split €50million in prize money, with the prize money for each round being split into a Winners Fee (given to the winner of each contest) and an Appearance Fee (guaranteed to all boxers).

WBA super-middleweight champion George Groves has signed on to take part in the tournament, while the cruiserweight version of the World Boxing Super Series will feature WBC champion Mairis Briedis, WBO champion Oleksandr Usyk and IBF champion Murat Gassiev.

World Boxing Super Series Super-Middleweight Predictions & Betting Tips

The announcement that Callum Smith would take part in the World Boxing Super Series came as somewhat of a surprise - but it was certainly a very good surprise.

Smith was the mandatory challenger to WBC champion Anthony Dirrell, but talks over a September showdown have dragged on and on meaning the unbeaten Liverpudlian has not stepped foot inside the ring since last December, and the talented 27-year-old has grown tired of playing the waiting game. And who can blame him!

Entering this tournament could result in a shot at the WBA super-middleweight champion in the next 10 months and it could result in some big-money domestic dust-ups with the likes of George Groves and Chris Eubank Jr. So this could prove to be the smartest move Smith’s camp could have made – but for that to be the case he has to win the competition.

So can he? The bookmakers certainly think he can because they have made him the favourite ahead of the likes of Groves, Eubank Jr and former light-heavyweight champion Jurgen Braehmer, and I share their confidence.

Smith has emerged as one of British boxing’s brightest prospects, winning the British and European titles while compiling a perfect 22-0 record. His trademark body shots have played a key role in him stopping 77% of his opponents and he certainly made a statement when he stopped the previously unbeaten Rocky Fielding inside one round.

Smith will come into the tournament with a lot of hype for a man who has never even fought for a world title, and the level of opposition he will face in the latter part of the tournament will be a step up in quality from who he has fought before, but this is the biggest decision of his career and the Liverpudlian can live up his billing to win the super-middleweight tournament and finally become a world champion.

World Boxing Super Series Cruiserweight Predictions & Betting Tips

Of the two competitions the cruiserweight one is clearly the most stacked with four reigning world champions competing in the eight-man tournament, but only one of them can win the competition and the bookmakers expect it to be WBO title-holder Oleksandr Usyk. And just like the super-middleweight part of the World Boxing Super Series, I find myself agreeing with the bookies.

Usyk is the least experienced of the eight men taking part, having fought just 12 times, but he is considered the number one 200-pounder on the planet and for very good reason. The former Olympic gold medallist has wasted no time since turning professional in 2013 and that is not a surprise because time is not on his side.

At the age of 30 the clock is ticking down on his plan to unify the cruiserweight division so this is his best opportunity because there are four other belts up for grabs. He can do it. With a superb amateur pedigree and punching power that has seen him win 10 of his 12 fights via stoppage, he is more than capable of finishing an opponent or going the full 12 rounds if he has to.
